Luxman E-250 Phono Amplifiers

Overview

The E-250 is the latest phono amplifier from LUXMAN, inheriting the best in design from its predecessor the E-200 that has been the reference model for compact phono equalizer amplifiers since it was released in 2008. A newly added function to the E-250 is the switching capability of load impedance and load capacity according to the cartridge characteristics for the ultimate enjoyment of the original detail of analog reproduction. The E-250 allows the listener to adjust the fine settings for every performance, releasing the expression engraved in the grooves and creating a hitherto unknown musical impression.


Features

Optimizing the cartridge load adjustment

The rear panel is equipped with a load impedance selector (34k/47k/56k/100kΩ) and a load capacity selector (0p/100p/220p/320pF) to match the characteristics of the cartridge and exploiting it to its full potential.

Specially selected embedded MC transformer

The E-250 features a step-up transformer with a 2 stage gain selection function in which a L/R independent super permalloy core is used, thereby supporting even low impedance MC cartridges. This creates a rich and expressive musicality that is only possible by boosting of the transformer.

Large capacity power supply circuit

The newly developed low profile, large capacity block capacitor together with a regulator circuit with discrete configuration that are used in the power supply circuit achieve the desired high quality power supply environment. The E-250 power supply circuit also features LUXMAN’s original round pattern board allowing the smooth transmission of the delicate sound signals.

Articulation function

The articulation function is designed to demagnetize the cartridge and the MC transformer using the signal current of music reproduced when magnetization of the cartridge has caused the sound quality to deteriorate. The articulation function can help to restore the cartridge to its original characteristics and maintain quality at a maximum level.

NF Type equalizer circuit

The NF type equalizer circuit in the E-250 features many of LUXMAN’s original and custom built parts. This equalizer has a high S/N ratio which reduces noise by connecting the first stage FET in parallel. A monaural switch when playing a monaural record is provided as well as a low cut switch that cuts out low frequency signals that can be generated by distorted records.

Input selection

The input can be selected from the front panel with ‘one touch’ operation from 2 players or a player with a twin arm. The option to easily change the cartridge type with respect to the input allows a favourite cartridge to be chosen for each phonograph record.

Aluminium blaster white front panel

The front panel design of the E-250 is finished with blaster white and offers lever type control switches on a compact sized body. Advanced DAC circuitry, reproducing digital media with excellent sound quality

Following standards set by our D-10X flagship model, high-end BD34301EKV DAC chips manufactured by Rohm Co., Ltd. in dual monaural configuration lie at the core of the digital circuitry that processes various digital media from discs, such as CDs and SACDs, to the latest high resolution audio files with exceptional quality. Over a USB input from a PC, Mac, NAS for audio, etc., the D-07X supports a wide range of format encoding up to PCM768kHz/32 bit and DSD22.4MHz. Bulk Pet transfer, which equalizes transmission load, can also be selected by using our dedicated driver software. Furthermore, for the popular high-quality format MQA (MQA-CD/MQA file), which expands the field of optical discs, streaming USB, COAX, and optical. The clocking system is designed to support accurate digital signal processing and is equipped with two high-precision, low-jitter, ultra-low phase noise modules that reduce noise near the oscillation frequency to a minimum. There is also a built-in, 2-mode analog FIR filter that allows you to select your preferred sound quality when playing SACD or DSD files.

HIghly robust LxDTM-i drive mechanism

The D-07X employs a left-side mechanical layout with an asymmetric configuration that realizes the shortest and ideal audio signal path and affords space for high quality analog circuitry. The disc drive section that supports CD and SACD playback is based on our original, highly robust LxDTM mechanism, which features a robust box structure that covers the entire mechanism with a side frame and top plate. Our LxDTM-i* system has evolved into an integrated structure that firmly blocks external vibration by being mounted directly onto the strong chassis side panel, achieving high precision and stable signal reading performance, comparable to our D-10X flagship model. The disc tray is made of die-cast aluminum, eliminating unnecessary vibration and resonance effects on the loader mechanism and enabling precise and smooth loading operation.

*LxDTM-i is an abbreviation for Luxman original Disc Transport Mechanism-improved, which realizes stable signal reading and mechanical integrity.

Newly developed discrete buffer circuitry

As a component that handles digital sources, high-precision signal reading by the drive mechanism and advanced digital signal processing are very important, but it goes without saying that the high performance analog output circuitry which determines the final audio quality is the most important factor in realizing that deep musical expression expected from high-end components designed by LUXMAN. The D-07X has a newly developed I/V conversion system that receives the differential outputs of the paired BD34301EKV DAC chips, operating in monaural mode, and feeds four discrete, perfectly matched amplifier modules. High-quality buffer circuitry lowers the impedance of the output signal. The unit powerfully drives any integrated amplifier or control amplifier that would be the next stage component. Out-of-audible-range filtering, which is essential for digital players, is performed in the buffer stage instead of having an independent LPF stage, enabling the reproduction of natural and smooth analog waveforms, resulting in higher clarity and more immediate sound quality.

Large-capacity power supply

The D-07X’s power transformer capacity has been increased by 50% compared to our D-06u model. Large capacity filter capacitors and independent regulator blocks have been installed for each circuit to develop a highly stable overall power supply environment traditional to LUXMAN. Again, clean and stable power has been achieved.

Discerning original technologies and construction

The D-07X is housed in a shielded chassis structure, insulating its various signal paths from interference and digital noise. The density gradient of its cast iron legs, firmly bearing the weight of the main body, protect delicate musical signals from external vibrations transmitted through the supporting surface. Internal damping countermeasures eliminate unnecessary vibrations generated within the unit itself.

Abundant input / output terminals

The analog outputs are equipped with both 32mm pitch, gold-plated RCA terminals and newly adopted, Neutrik shielded XLR terminals. Abundant digital connectivity features a USB terminal that supports PCM/DSD input, with coaxial and optical input terminals that support PCM formats up to 192kHz/24bit, and coaxail and optical output terminals.

External interlocking terminal to expand the function

The D-07X is newly equipped with trigger input/output terminals for linking remote contrl signals between corresponding LUXMAN products.

*Connection cable is not included. Please source a 3.5mm monaural jack cable. We hope to develop control terminal support via wireless remote operation as an option in the future.

Display with excellent visibility

The FL display with excellent visibility that shines on the delicate panel of blaster white finish is equipped with a 4x zoom display mode that is easy to see even from a distance. When playing the MQA format, the decoding status (Studio: Blue, Authentic: Green, Renderer: Magenta) is displayed by a three-color LED indicator.

AC inlet and power cable

The AC inlet’s structure has been improved to support the weight of heavy power cables by reversing the mounting, suppressing any movement of the power cable while maintaining a stable grip.

Our latest amplification feedback engine literally brings music to life with LIFES* Version 1.0
By feeding back only the distorted components generated in the audio signal’s journey to the final amp stage, LUXMAN’s proprietary “ODNF” amplification circuitry achieves excellent static characteristics and natural sound quality as if it were a “non-feedback” system. During the development of the M-10X flagship stereo power amplifier launched in 2021, technical concepts explored there were retained and the circuit configuration, which had become very complex over years of improvements has been completely redesigned to realize “LIFES” exquisite, high-fidelity sound and defines an amplification feedback engine blueprint for our next generation of components. The L-509Z is equipped with independent LIFES modules operating simultaneously in each of its fully discrete pre and power sections. The L-509Z is a pre-main amplifier that is worthy of the “single-chassis separates” concept that incorporates quality seperate units into a single, elegant chassis and has achieved an elevated level of musicality and unprecedented detail in comparison to other amplification circuits. The output section utilizes three stage Darlington bipolar transistors in quadruple-paralleled push-pull configuration to achieve outstanding output power and near perfect power linearity performance comparable to a standalone power amplifier, developing 120W+120W at 8 ohms and 220W+220W at 4 ohms.The result is spectacular sound quality with an abundance of energy.

Electronically controlled attenuator LECUA-EX* incorporating an elaborate rotation mechanism
A tactile, satisfying volume control function is essential for audio amplifiers. To feed a fixed gain power amplifier with a musical signal at a level suitable for listening, precise control is required to smoothly attenuate the voltage while maintaining the quality of the input source. LECUA, developed by LUXMAN, is an electronically controlled attenuator system that switches through a series of high-quality, fixed value resistors for each channel independently. These are neatly arranged on the sub-assembly according to the position of the volume control k**b. Since the release of the C-1000f control amplifier in 2006 to commemorate LUXMAN’s 80th anniversary, “LECUA1000”, which similarly integrates into the amplification circuitry, has been used in many LUXMAN products as a volume control system that minimizes the effects of external vibrations and changes in sound quality across the operating range of the volume control and is also resistant to deterioration over time. The L-509Z combines a highly precise rotary encoder with a newly developed weighted rotation mechanism to create the “LECUA-EX”, which offers even greater reliability and a natural, high-quality operational feel. 88 fine steps from 0 to 87dB and an acceleration setting for the speed at which the volume k**b is rotated and a long-press setting for the remote control allow for comfortable and thorough volume control action with minimal degradation in sound quality.

ODNF* Version 4.0 – Innovative amplification feedback circuit

An integral part of the design of the L-505uXII is LUXMAN’s original ODNF amplification feedback circuit featuring a high-speed primary slew rate, an ultra-wide bandwidth and a low level of distortion that is achieved by feeding back only the distorted components of the audio from the amplifier’s output circuit. The L-505uXII is equipped with the latest Version 4.0 ODNF circuit, resulting in a dramatically enhanced accuracy in distortion detection due to the paralleled first stage and Darlington equipped second stage amplification circuit, as well as a paralleled first stage error detection circuit. With it’s lower impedance and higher S/N ratio, the L-505uXII realizes accurate reproduction of even the gentlest audio signals and achieves a full range of dynamic musical expression. The output stage, with it’s parallel push-pull structure, has secured sufficient power at 100W+100W(8Ω) and 150W+150W(4Ω).

Highly accurate LECUA computerized attenuator

LECUA (Luxman Electronically Controlled Ultimate Attenuator) is at the heart of the pre-amplifier section and the sound volume adjustment function of the L-505uXII. The L-505uXII design also uses a solid state(IC) type circuit to achieve a significant reduction in size. LECUA provides an ideal level control mechanism that allows smooth and fine volume adjustment over 88 steps, thereby minimizing any deterioration of the audio signal. In addition, left and right balance adjustment is integrated into the attenuator’s control functions. The multifunctional ability of LECUA ensures accuracy over the full range of the volume control, whilst suppressing any deterioration of sound quality. The volume may also be adjusted with the remote control, but when adjusting the volume manually, the tactile design and gradual motion of the control itself enables intuitive adjustment of the attenuation level.

iscrete buffer circuit

The L-505uXII features a new discrete buffer circuit in the output stage of the pre-amplifier circuit that is equivalent to the type used in our high-end C-900u separate amplifier. The pre-amp output stage is able to drive the signal with enhanced current supply capacity. The clarity of the audio signal is protected, whilst at the same time, the driving force fed through to the power amplifier stage is significantly increased. The power and reproduction capability of the L-505uXII achieves overwhelming scale sensitivity and a sharpness on start-up that cannot be achieved by conventional pre-amplifiers.

High stability power supply

The power supply of the L-505uXII consists of an EI core type power transformer, highly regulated, with four large capacity 10,000μF blocking capacitors creating a highly stable power supply. This ensures an instantaneous, constant and stable current supply.

Low impedance transmission

Large-capacity, low resistance speaker relays are connected in parallel to enable lossless transmission for the powerful driving force that is generated by the large-scale output circuit. In addition, the damping factor has been improved from 180 to 210 by lowering the impedance of the wiring pattern.

Features

Highly advanced digital decoding

The D-03X can reveal new subtleties in even the most familiar music. MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) is an award-winning British technology that delivers the sound of the original master recording. The player includes MQA technology, which enables you to play back MQA-CDs as well as MQA audio files up to 24-bit transferred via USB, optical and coaxial inputs. The USB input also supports PCM data up to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD data up to 11.2 MHz while the optical and coaxial inputs accept PCM signals up to 192 kHz/24-bit. In addition to conventional “isochronous” file transfers at fixed bitrates, the USB input supports four modes of Bulk Pet* high-resolution audio file transfer. Bulk Pet, optimizes data packaging and delivery to the DAC easing the processing load for both the host CPU and the device CPU enhancing playback stability and ultimately yielding improved sound quality. All signals benefit from a high-precision, low-jitter, low-phase-noise master clock, minimizing noise near the oscillation frequency and optimizing transmission accuracy.

Engineered in every aspect

At LUXMAN, we matched the meticulous disc transport and digital design of the D-03X with a thoroughly engineered chassis and analog output stage. The asymmetric mechanical layout places the CD drive at the left – ideal for signal flow, resonance control and weight balance. Our robust box chassis frame shields the CD transport and delicate circuitry from external vibrations and noise. For the all-important analog circuit, we feed the outputs of the dual monaural digital-to-analog converters to a current-to-voltage converter stage. The following stage low-pass filter amplifier benefits from low impedance. Fully balanced outputs featuring Neutrik XLR connectors complement conventional RCA output terminals. LUXMAN’s unwavering attention to detail contributes to ultimate listening enjoyment.

Rugged CD transport with steel top plate

The CD transport mechanism achieves uncommonly stable playback with a steel top plate, an 8mm thick solid aluminum base, a shielded box sub chassis and a loop-less structure. Undoubtedly expensive, these advances achieve uncommonly smooth, accurate and quiet disc read.

Dual Monaural D-to-A converters

LUXMAN engineers selected a pair of Texas Instruments 32-bit PCM1795 digital-to-analog converters to process digital signals with remarkable precision. Separating left and right channel conversion helps reveal the subtlest micro-dynamics.

Full complement of inputs and outputs

Full complement of inputs and outputs To support the widest range of associated equipment, the D-03X provides 18mm pitch gold-plated RCA outputs and high-end Neutrik balanaced XLR outputs.
