Ever been stuck in traffic, only for it to suddenly clear up with no accident, no roadworks, and no reason?

Researchers call this a phantom traffic jam.

The modern passenger-car cruise control system was invented by a blind mechanical engineer, Ralph Teetor. The common origin story is that he was annoyed while riding with his lawyer, who kept speeding up and slowing down while talking, so Teetor wanted a device that could keep the car at a constant speed. He developed the idea in the 1940s and received a patent around 1950; Chrysler later introduced it commercially as “Auto-Pilot” in 1958, while Cadillac helped popularize the term “Cruise Control.”

He didn’t drive himself. Ralph Teetor was blind from childhood, so the story is that he experienced cars as a passenger, not as the driver. He was riding with his lawyer, who kept slowing down while talking and speeding up while listening. That uneven speed annoyed Teetor, so he designed a system to hold a car at a steady speed.

He was still able to invent it because he was a trained mechanical engineer, not because he personally drove. He understood vehicle mechanics, worked in automotive engineering, and used his strong sense of touch to inspect and design mechanical parts.

He didn’t need to drive to notice the problem. He felt the uncomfortable speed changes as a passenger, then solved it as an engineer.

Driver monitoring is not there to annoy you. Good alerts should be useful, not noisy. 🧐

It is there to make sure the driver is still attentive and ready to take over when needed.

Some systems only know whether your hand is applying pressure on the steering wheel. But real attention is more than hand pressure.

With camera-based driver monitoring, the goal is simple: fewer meaningless nags, better-timed alerts, and a calmer driver-assistance experience.
