What does inclusion look like in a classroom? Last week, we saw one answer at Kambui School for the Deaf. 💙

The students won first place in STEAMLabs Africa’s Madaraka Day Challenge with a digital poster they created together. We visited the school to celebrate their work and present awards and appreciation gifts to the students, teachers and school leadership.

Mrs. Connie Nthenya Mutiso, Head of Institution, shared words that have stayed with us:

“Embracing this platform brings true inclusivity to our classrooms. Our learners, who are hard of hearing, are now learning on equal footing with any other student out there.”

As a Canva Education Partner, we’re proud to see learners use digital tools to share their ideas and show their creativity.

This International Week of Deaf People, we celebrate the Kambui students and the educators supporting them. Congratulations to the whole school community! 👏

Thank you Canva, The Kenya National Examinations Council and Microsoft Education for supporing this initiative.

Change the environment, not the learner.

What does it really mean to engage the whole person when working with learners?

In our recent session on Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Creating Inclusive Classrooms for Every Learner, Mr. Maina Gioko, Head of Professional Development at Aga Khan Academy Mombasa and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Aga Khan University, shared an important perspective on what it means to engage learners as whole people.

His message is a reminder that inclusive learning goes beyond delivering content. It requires us to think about the different needs, experiences and ways learners engage with the learning environment.

Watch the clip to hear Mr. Maina's perspective on whole person engagement.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 “𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞” 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫?

In every classroom, learners engage with information differently. Some may need more visual support. Others may need different ways to participate, express what they know, or stay engaged.

So how can educators design learning experiences that work for more learners from the beginning?

Tonight, Africa’s Educators explores:

𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐔𝐃𝐋): 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫

We’ll explore the three core UDL principles; engagement, representation, and action & expression — and look at practical ways educators can remove barriers to learning and increase student participation.

𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄
DISCLAIMER 😅, A short beautiful story,

We had stopped by the roadside on our way back from Siaya, to buy some melons as requested by Mitchelle, not knowing that this would be the beginning of a beautiful story. A lady who was buying pineapples nearby became curious having been drawn by the writing on our shirts.

“Igniting Young Minds.”

She asked: “So, what exactly are you igniting in young minds?”

That was the moment the team went straight into pitching mode! 😄

She then invited us to her office in Luanda so that we could continue the conversation and explore how we could work together.

Fast forward to today…

Today, we successfully launched a Community Code Club in Emuhaya, led by Samwel, with Madam Tina Oburu serving as our safeguarding sponsor.

We also had our very first coding session with the kids. 💻✨

The kids explored the Scratch interface and created their very first projects.

Watching them interact with technology, experiment, ask questions and create something of their own is a true testimony of young minds being ignited.🥳

Teacher Annorite’s reflection reminds us that resilience isn't always about staying, enduring, or silently carrying the pressure.

For teachers, resilience can also mean 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆.

Teachers give so much of themselves to their learners and communities.

They deserve spaces that support their wellbeing too.
