Palladium mining in South Africa produced 70,000 kg in 2025, making the country the world's second-largest palladium producer — behind only Russia's 84,000 kg.

Almost all of it comes from one place: the Bushveld Complex, the largest layered platinum-group-metal intrusion anywhere on Earth. Canada and Zimbabwe, the next two producers, don't come close — 16,000 kg and 15,000 kg respectively.

For platinum-group-metal investors and industrial buyers, that concentration is the headline: two countries supply roughly 80% of the world's palladium.

What's your biggest question about where your palladium supply actually comes from?

Ten countries supply most of the world's gold — and gold deposit locations follow the same pattern almost everywhere you look.

Gold concentrates in old rock belts that have stayed productive for generations. That's why the same regions keep turning up new finds instead of new places suddenly producing gold out of nowhere.

Satellite reads make it faster to figure out which part of a belt is still worth checking, often in 5 to 20 days instead of months of ground work.

Did you know fewer than 30 red diamonds exist on the entire planet?

They almost all came from one mine -- Argyle, in Western Australia's Kimberley region -- which closed for good in 2020. Since then, no major new source has appeared, and the record auction price for a red diamond now sits near $2.68M per carat.

For gem collectors and luxury investors, red diamonds are about as finite as a rare asset gets: a fixed, shrinking supply that can't be mined back into existence.

What's the rarest gem or mineral discovery you've ever heard of?

Satellite sugarcane monitoring is having a moment in Florida this season. A February freeze cost the state's newly planted cane 75 days of growth, and USDA's 2026/27 outlook has come down to 41.75 tons per acre — below the 10-year average.

Near Clewiston, where one of the country's largest cane sugar operations sources its supply, that kind of shift changes harvest scheduling fast. Farmonaut's platform fuses Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1 SAR, and Landsat-8 imagery — tracking NDVI, NDWI, and SAR backscatter — to flag stressed cane blocks every 5 to 10 days at 10-meter resolution, well ahead of what ground scouting alone can cover.

What's your biggest crop monitoring challenge this season?

Ask about the kyawthuite price and you'll come up empty. Not because it's expensive — because it's never been sold.

Only one kyawthuite crystal has ever been confirmed to exist. It was found near Mogok, Myanmar, in 2010, weighs 1.61 carats, and now sits in a museum collection instead of a dealer's case.

For comparison, painite — gemology's usual rarity benchmark — trades at $50,000 to $60,000 a carat, and there are still 300+ known crystals. Kyawthuite has exactly one.

That's what real rarity does to a market: it removes the market entirely.

Chile produces 27% of the world's copper — more than Peru, China, and the DRC combined. That's the headline in the top copper producing countries ranking for 2026.

But the real story for anyone watching commodity markets is what's happening underneath that number: global copper demand is outrunning supply by an estimated 500,000 tonnes this year, as EVs, power grids, and data centers all pull harder on the metal.

Finding and confirming new copper ground faster matters more than ever in that kind of market. Satellite-based mineral exploration validates a target's ground truth in 5-20 days, at 80-85% lower cost than a traditional field program.

What's your biggest challenge when it comes to sourcing reliable copper supply data?

“Sustainable mining practices” get talked about a lot — but here's what the numbers actually say right now: two in three mines carry real water risk, and a third of tailings storage sites aren't yet fully compliant with the global standard (ICMM, 2026).

The good news is that some of the gap is fixable earlier than people think. Satellite-guided exploration — instead of drilling blind — cuts cost by 80–85% and delivers a drill-ready target in 5–20 business days, with a much smaller footprint before a single truck moves.

Fewer blind holes drilled means less ground disturbed before anyone even knows what's underground. That's what sustainable mining practices can look like at the very first stage of a project, not just at closure.

What's your biggest sustainability challenge on the ground right now?
