Cyber Essentials sounds technical. It isn’t, not really.

At its core, it focuses on five key areas:

✔ Firewalls
✔ Secure configuration
✔ Access control
✔ Malware protection
✔ Patch management

Nothing exotic. Just the fundamentals done properly.

And that’s the point.

Most cyber incidents don’t happen because of sophisticated attacks. They happen because basic controls were missing or ignored.

For manufacturing SMEs, these controls can mean the difference between business as usual and production grinding to a halt.

No jargon. No overcomplication. Just solid, practical security.

If you want a straightforward breakdown of what this looks like in the real world, this guide walks through it step by step:

Today we're celebrating our Senior Business Advisor, Angus the friendly face (and voice) that so many of our customers meet first!
Whether you're brand new to Your IT or a long-time customer, Angus is there making sure you're getting the absolute most out of your relationship with us.

He's also our resident translator of all things "IT geek" turning the technical jargon into plain English (a skill we're pretty sure deserves its own language certificate 😄).

Thank you for everything you do for our customers and our team, Angus. Wishing you a fantastic birthday

Most small business owners think cyber insurance is a "nice to have."

Then they get a ransom demand, or a data breach notification, or a call from their bank saying fraudulent transactions have been processed. Suddenly, it's very much a "need to have."

Here's the thing though: walking into an insurance broker's office unprepared is like going to a bank manager with no accounts. You'll either get rejected, quoted through the roof, or-worst case-find out your cover doesn't actually cover what you thought it did.

Your IT provider should be helping you answer the questions before you ever sit down with a broker. What data are you actually holding? What security measures should you have in place? What will a policy genuinely pay for? What are the limits, excesses, and how do you actually reduce costs?

We've written a practical guide to the cyber insurance questions every UK small business should be asking. It's not salesy. It's just honest.

What’s the fastest way to overpay for IT support?

Choose the provider with the lowest monthly fee.

Sounds backwards, but it happens all the time.

A low headline price often hides the real costs, slow response times, security add-ons, project extras, on-site charges, and contracts that feel suspiciously like a gym membership from 2009.

Most business owners only find that out after they’ve signed.

That’s exactly why we wrote this guide. It breaks down what to compare, what to question, and what red flags to spot before you commit.

A single unpatched laptop was all it took. One machine, still on Windows 10, connected to the same network as everything else in the business.

That's the pattern behind most small business breaches involving outdated software. Not sophisticated attacks. Not clever hackers. Just an open door that nobody remembered to close.

The costs stack up fast once something goes wrong. Downtime alone from a ransomware incident can run into tens of thousands of pounds for a small business, before you even factor in lost customer trust, potential fines, or an insurance policy that turns out not to cover you because your software wasn't up to date.

None of this is inevitable. It's a maintenance problem, not a mystery, and it's genuinely straightforward to fix once you know what you're dealing with.

We've laid out the real risks (and the fix) in plain English, no jargon.
