34% of developers say difficulty estimating cost before a task runs limits how much autonomy they give AI agents. Only 7% say nothing limits them.

With Cursor, OpenAI and GitHub all moving to usage-based pricing, every agent step now has a price. Even company-paid access doesn't escape it: engineering leaders tell us developers often run out of their token allocation early.

Agents are being metered. The advantage goes to the vendor whose meter is easiest to read.

The AI Developer Tools Benchmark Q3 2026 is out!

See how 19 AI developer tools compare on adoption, conversion, primary reliance, and satisfaction, among others. Learn where each tool is winning and where it is falling behind.

Built for product, product marketing, and DevRel leads at AI developer tool companies who need to understand where their tool is gaining ground, where it is losing out, and which gaps matter most.

One finding from this wave: GitHub Copilot converts 54% of the developers who are aware of it into active users. OpenAI Codex and Claude Code each convert 44%.

Base: 2,063 professional developers using AI developer tools, Q3 2026.

Tomorrow: the AI tasks developers are quietly dropping.

Developers are giving AI fewer tasks, yet they are relying on it more for the ones they keep. If you are about to roll out a new AI tool or AI feature, this is the line to see before the budget is spent.

Tomorrow, Liam Bollmann-Dodd, our Principal Market Research Consultant, puts two waves of our global developer survey side by side, six months apart. You will see:

✅ Which tasks to hand to AI first, based on the experience of other developers

✅ Which tasks developers are quietly dropping

✅ Where to point your AI roadmap and budget next

Learn from other developers' AI use before you roll out yours.

The live room holds 100 people. Thursday 8 October 2026, 16:00 to 16:45 BST, questions included. Register even if you cannot attend live and we will send you the recording.

Same AI developer tools, opposite results. What changes is the experience of the developer using them.

62% of developers with 16+ years of experience say AI developer tools cut the time they spend on repetitive tasks. Among developers with 0-2 years, 42% report a decrease and 44% report an increase.

In her new analysis, Myriam Boualami looks at SlashData's Developer Nation Q1 2026 data from 4,203 professional developers who use AI developer tools in their workflows.

• 16+ years of experience: 62% spend less time on repetitive tasks, 25% spend more
• 0-2 years of experience: 42% spend less time, 44% spend more
• Reading documentation or forums: 51% of the most experienced spend less time, against 32% of the least experienced (n=4,200)

For engineering leaders, time saved is the ROI metric cited most, by 40% of developers in leadership roles (n=2,341). A business case built on it depends on the experience of the team using the tools.

With junior headcount already thinning, the experience mix that produces today's return may not be the one organisations have in a few years.

The return on AI developer tools is paid out in proportion to experience.

Only 14% of developers let an AI agent run end to end with minimal or no review.

Bounded autonomy is now the most common way developers use agentic tools, so the whole question sits between those two points. Base: professional developers, Q3 2026 wave, from the AI Developer Tools Benchmark.

Adoption tells you a tool has entered the workflow. Autonomy tells you how much work developers are prepared to hand over without watching every step.

For anyone writing agent messaging for next year, that 14% is a useful reality check on how far current developer behaviour has moved toward full autonomy.

The full Q3 2026 wave is out in early October.

GitHub Copilot turns 48% of the developers who know it into developers who use it. Most tools in the benchmark convert fewer than one in five.

The Q3 funnel shows how effectively leading AI developer tools turn awareness into active usage among professional developers. Base: professional developers, Q3 2026 wave.

For product marketing and competitive intelligence at a tool vendor, conversion is the line that separates a reach problem from a preference problem, and each one takes a different budget.

The full Q3 2026 wave is out in early October.

Know how developers use AI before you build your next AI tool.

Developers are giving AI fewer tasks, yet they are relying on it more for the ones they keep. Build on the wrong side of that line and your next AI feature lands on a task developers are already walking away from.

On Thursday 8 October, Liam Bollmann-Dodd, our Principal Market Research Consultant, puts two waves of our global developer survey side by side, six months apart. You will leave knowing:

✅ Which tasks to hand to AI first when you roll out a new AI tool or AI feature, based on the experience of other developers

✅ Which tasks not to hand to AI unless you're ready to live with the consequences: the ones developers are quietly dropping

✅ Where to point your AI roadmap and budget next

For developer marketing and DevRel, product and AI platform teams, and enterprise technology leaders.

The live room holds 100 people. Thursday 8 October 2026, 16:00 to 16:45 BST, questions included. Register even if you cannot attend live and we will send you the recording.

One category label, five very different customers.

Some are highly non-technical.
Some are mixed.
Others remain primarily developer-focused.

That distinction matters because a user on Wix Harmony, Lovable, Replit, Claude Code, or OpenAI Codex should not automatically be treated as the same type of customer.

For technology leaders, collapsing these audiences into one category can distort:
➡️ total addressable market estimates
➡️ product positioning
➡️ onboarding assumptions
➡️ pricing strategy
➡️ and governance requirements

The strategic question is not only:
How many people use AI software-building tools?

It is:
Which users are builders, what are they trying to create, and which part of the market should your organisation serve?

Whether a team measures AI ROI changes how its own executives rate AI tools, by roughly three times.

In teams that do not measure AI ROI, 13% of engineering executives rate AI tools as not valuable.

Among teams that measure AI ROI, that falls to 4%.

Why this is important:
• Measurement helps leaders evaluate AI beyond isolated failures or recent frustrations.
• Without evidence, AI value is easier to doubt and harder to defend.
• Better measurement gives leaders a stronger basis for deciding what to scale, change, or stop.

The largest builder platforms sit at opposite ends of technical maturity.
SlashData classifies:
➡️ Wix Harmony as highly non-technical, with an estimated 76%–90% builder share
➡️ Lovable and Bolt.new as mostly non-technical, at 61%–75%
➡️ Replit as mixed, at 41%–60%
➡️ Developer-focused tools such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and BLACKBOX as highly technical, with only 10%–25% of users estimated to be builders.

The executive implication:
A large builder audience does not justify one generic builder experience.
Technology companies should adapt their approach by technical maturity: highly non-technical audiences need guided creation, templates, clearer safeguards, and outcome-led onboarding; mixed audiences need progressive complexity and flexible workflows; highly technical audiences need control, extensibility, integrations, and fewer constraints.

The solution is a tiered product and GTM model based on builder capability, not a single "no-code user" persona.
