We were consulted by the production company during the making of this piece.

We provided some expert guidance and insight regarding how these ‘spycams’ are obtained, installed, operated and most importantly detected.

🚨🚨🚨Everyone, not just women, should be made aware of the serious safeguarding threat from devices that compromise privacy. Children, young adults, men and elderly people are also targeted by ‘spycam’ voyeurs who share and view the footage. 🚨🚨🚨

Technical surveillance is the industry term, which includes ‘spycams’. Technical surveillance countermeasures (TSCM) is the term for mitigation and detection of privacy compromising technical surveillance attacks.

Whilst this piece very much focuses on the targeting of women by ‘spycammers’, women are not the only targets and victims.

These nasty privacy compromising attacks are placed in educational settings, leisure facilities, corporate restrooms, hotels, cruise ship cabins, coffee shop toilets, rented accommodation, store changing rooms…there’s a long list of where devices have been found and reported openly. (Obviously, not all are discovered or reported openly!)

As devices continue to become cheaper, easy obtainable, simple to install, with easily extracted and shared footage raising awareness of these privacy attacks is essential.

Covert audio and video recording happens. Pretending it doesn’t won’t protect staff or students.
If your school, college or university doesn’t have a risk assessment for technical surveillance, how can it claim to be managing the risk?
Recognise it. Assess it. Mitigate it.
