AI is no longer just writing scam emails.

Reuters has reported that cyber insurers are already adapting policies because autonomous AI agents can create losses that do not look like traditional hacks.

That matters for small businesses.

The National Cyber Security Centre now recommends using passkeys wherever they are available.

Why?

Because passkeys are much harder to phish than normal passwords.

A passkey lets you sign in using a trusted device, fingerprint, face scan or PIN. There is no normal password for a criminal to trick you into typing into a fake login page.

For small businesses, the direction of travel is clear:
Use passkeys where available.
Use a password manager where passwords are still needed.
Turn on MFA for important accounts.
Stop sharing logins.
Remove access immediately when someone leaves.

The safest password may eventually be no password at all.

But until then, unmanaged passwords are still a business risk.

A new report just found a 1,380% jump in a sneaky new phishing trick this year — and criminals are now renting out ready-made phishing kits like a Netflix subscription. AI writes the emails, so they're polished, personal, and perfectly timed.

One click and someone's in your inbox. Then it's your invoices, your client files, your bank conversations.

Pro tip: if an email asks you to enter a "code" to verify or re-authorise an account you weren't trying to log into — stop. That's the new trick, and it can slip past normal login protections.

No drama, just a straight question: if your inbox, your booking system, or your files disappeared tomorrow, would you know what to do?

The National Cyber Security Centre's advice for small organisations boils down to three basics: back things up, protect your accounts and devices, and know how to spot a scam. That's it. No jargon, no fortune spent.

Most of the damage in a cyber incident doesn't come from the incident itself, it comes from the chaos afterwards. Not knowing who to call. Not knowing if your backup actually works. Losing three days of trading while you figure it out.

Pro tip: write your recovery plan on one page — who you'd call, where backups live, how you'd tell customers. Do it once, on a calm day, not mid-crisis.
