Signing with a new IT provider feels like the finish line. It is actually the starting line, and the next two weeks tell you almost everything about the relationship you just bought.
A strategic provider spends that fortnight learning your business. A transactional one flips a switch, hands you a support number, and waits for something to break.
Here is the bar. In the first two weeks you should see: a full asset audit (every device, server and cloud app, including the ones nobody mentioned), a security posture review with MFA and endpoint protection going on straight away, a clean-up of orphaned accounts and unused licences, documentation of every system, and a written 90-day improvement plan with owners and dates.
That last one is the tell. A dated plan shows they have understood your environment and know where it needs to go, rather than just agreeing to answer the phone.
If none of that happened when you onboarded your current provider, you are probably on a reactive service, not a strategic one. The good news: you can ask for all of it now, and how they respond will tell you plenty.
