Africa is home to almost 18% of the world's population and accounts for less than 1% of global insurance premiums.

That gap is the subject of a new piece from Chelene Naidoo, our Head of Growth for Africa. She sets out the ten challenges that will decide which African insurers lead the next decade and which follow.

Some are familiar, such as pe*******on below 1% in markets like Nigeria and Egypt. Others get less attention. 83% of employment across Africa is informal, so annual premiums and fixed monthly debit orders do not fit how most people are paid.

Chelene also covers trust, distribution costs, currency volatility, regulatory fragmentation, data scarcity, legacy systems, fraud and climate risk that is growing faster than the protection available against it.

Are claims the moment of truth for insurance?

That was the question the closing panel wrestled with at this year's MGAA Annual Conference, and our VP of Marketing Ed Halsey was on it, alongside Insiyah Davenport of Optio Group, Angela Flaherty of Clyde & Co and Tom Major of HDI, moderated by David Williams of Qlaims.

The numbers set the scene. The Clyde & Co MGA report found 77% of MGAs and 92% of carriers flagging the need for a better claims experience. And yet, as Ed put it on the day, we have more technology available to us than ever before, but people seem reluctant to use it for claims, which is exactly where it stands to make the biggest difference.

That's the gap the panel kept returning to. Claims is where trust is won or lost, where customers are retained or lost, and still the part of the journey most likely to be treated as an afterthought while transformation budgets go elsewhere.

The MGAA has written the session up in its Voice Conference Special, pages 18 and 19. Worth a read if claims is on your agenda for 2027, and it should be:

Three roles are open in London right now, and all three sit at the front of the business.

A Sales Director, because the UK and European pipeline has outgrown the team working it. This is the primary sales lead for the region, reporting to our Chief Growth Officer, owning everything from first conversation to signed agreement.

A Pre-Sales Manager, based on Lime Street, for someone who knows the London Market and can turn "how would that work for us?" into a demo that answers the question. You'd join an expanding Growth team alongside our existing Pre-Sales Manager.

And a Marketing Executive, because there's now more story to tell than there are people to tell it. Content, events, social, reporting, the lot, working directly with our VP of Marketing. If you've followed this page this year, from Insurance Simulator to the Tour de InsurTech, you've seen the kind of marketing you'd be joining.

One sells the platform, one proves it, one tells people it exists. Sales, pre-sales and marketing, hired in the same quarter, in the same city. That's what a pipeline being taken seriously looks like.

Pre-Sales Manager: London Market | London (Lime Street) | Hybrid

Vegas is a fitting place to talk about insurance technology, because most of it is sold like a magic show. Bright lights, a confident host and a great deal you don't quite understand until the bill arrives.

We're going anyway. Genasys is at ITC Vegas at the end of the month, Booth 1050 at Mandalay Bay, and we'd rather fill the diary before we land than after.

Here's what we're actually good to talk about, no showmanship required.

Re-platforming, honestly. Not the brochure version. What moving a live book really involves, what breaks, what it costs and how long it actually takes. If you're carrying scar tissue from a past implementation, come and compare notes.

MGA operations in a softening market. Loss ratios by cohort in real time, repricing in days rather than quarters and reporting your capacity provider actually trusts. The unglamorous machinery that decides who keeps their pen.

And one platform for policy, claims and billing, configured by the business rather than coded by a backlog. If your product changes still wait in a release queue, we should talk.

Gavin Peters and Ed Halsey will be on the stand all week. If you'd like a proper conversation rather than a fly-by, message either of them here or find us on the ITC Vegas app.

Booth 1050. Come and say hello.

And so 2026's Tour de InsurTech concludes, fittingly where it began. In London.

From the London loop to Tunbridge Wells, to Chester, to Bath, to Reading and back to London. It's been an epic ride.

Thanks to Andre Symes for pioneering the event and making sure it happened, and for leading a stage himself.

Thanks to our stage leaders: Ed Gaze, Paul Reading, James Bilham and David Clamp.

And a huge shout out to ironman Ferdi, who rode all five stages, nearly 500 miles across consecutive days. A first in TDI history.

So that's a wrap.

Five stages.

Thirty-three riders.

One hundred and seventeen coffees.

One hundred and eighteen pieces of cake.

And one seriously funky kit, designed by South African illustration studio Hasie and the Robots.

Thank you to everyone who took part. We hope to see even more of you in 2027.

Day four of the Tour de InsurTech, and it was the big one so far.

75 miles from Bath to Reading, led by David Clamp of Camelot. A proper slog by anyone's measure, and not without incident: we can confirm at least one puncture along the way. And before anyone asks, our analysts have verified it was a genuine mechanical, not edited in by a rider angling for a lie-down.

The reward at the end was a well-earned evening of dinner, drinks and an overnight stay before the finish.

Which brings us to day five. Reading to London. The high-speed, high-stakes final stage.

Last time out, bikes changed hands. What 2026 has in store, we're about to find out.

One stage to go. Let's finish this.

"We automate the past."

That's the line our COO Becky Downing lands in the latest issue of Modern Insurance Magazine, in a piece on claims AI worth your time this week.

Her argument: most of what gets called AI transformation is really automation. Taking a capable new technology and using it to do the existing process faster, when the existing process was shaped by systems and workarounds that no longer need to exist. Automation does the same thing faster. Adaptation changes what you do because the world has changed. Claims makes the difference stark, because so much of the industry still runs on a monthly calendar while repair capacity, fraud patterns and customer circumstances move while the claim is still open.

The part that stays with you: you can have the cleverest AI strategy in the world, but if every useful insight runs into hard-coded workflows and slow change, AI isn't your bottleneck. Your ability to act is.

Issue 79 continues the claims conversation from the last edition, with contributors across the market on the decisions that shape the claims journey. Becky's piece is in there alongside them.

Day three of the Tour de InsurTech, and the road headed to Chester.

A smaller group out today, led by James Bilham. A more intimate ride, and no less fun for it. Sometimes the best days on the bike are the ones with a bit more room to talk.

Anyone riding alongside James was in good company. Four years ago he broke his back in an accident and was told he might never walk again. He's since become the reigning British Para Triathlon wheelchair champion and has worn Team GB colours. Today he led a stage of the Tour, and the group behind him could not have asked for a better person out front.

James definitely wins the award for the coolest bike of the event!

Two stages to go. The finish is in sight.

Day two of the Tour de InsurTech, and the road turns to Tunbridge Wells.

Ten riders took on the loop today, led out by Paul Reading, with our own André Symes among them. The legs are a little heavier than yesterday, the hills no more forgiving, and the optimism holding up better than expected.

Today's peloton: Paul Reading, André Symes, Anthony Gunn, Ferdi O'Brien, Jakes Jakobsen, Rob Hughes, Stephen Lambert, Stuart Dickinson, Tim Fox and Wayne Starritt. Take a bow, all of you.

Pictures from the day are below, and yes, everyone is still smiling. Not going to lie - there seem to have been considerably more refreshment stops on this leg! But Andre's earned his two burgers having actual ridden to the start line from London before the stage even began.

The Tour de InsurTech is underway!

Eleven riders set off on the London loop first thing this morning, the first of five stages crossing the country this week. Fresh legs, clean bikes, boundless optimism. Ask us again at stage four.

There's a serious bit under the Lycra - getting the insurance community out from behind their desks and onto the road together is a rare thing in an industry that mostly meets in conference halls and on Teams calls. So instead, they're spending five days speeding across the British countryside together.

Special mention to Ferdi and Shannon, whose training regime this week took in a detour via Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm. We couldn't resist sharing those shots. That, we'd suggest, is exactly how you prepare for a serious week in the saddle!

We'll be following every stage this week. Cheer them on, share the photos, and if you spot a Genasys jersey looking a little less fresh by Friday, that's the sport working as intended.

Ride safe out there. Four stages to go.
