“Harvest now, decrypt later” is not a future problem.

An average UK data breach cost £3.13 million in 2026.

IBM found that 22% of malicious breaches in its UK study involved AI-generated attacks. At the same time, only 32% of UK organisations reported using security AI and automation extensively.

Those using it extensively reported average breach costs of £2.26 million, compared with £3.85 million among organisations using none.

Our analysis explains what is increasing breach costs, what is helping bring them down and where organisations plan to invest next.

Owning Microsoft 365 is not the same as managing it. Copilot is where the gap starts to show.

Gartner found that only 5% of organisations that completed a Microsoft Copilot pilot went on to a larger deployment.

Content sprawl, oversharing and poor governance were repeatedly cited as problems.

Copilot does not create security issues. It exposes what is already sitting in the tenant.

Every prompt runs with the user’s existing access. A document that has been buried in SharePoint for fifteen years can suddenly be found with a plain-English question.

Martin Summerhayes, our Head of Managed & Support Services, looks at what organisations should check before a wider rollout, including permissions, sensitivity labels, identity lifecycle and licensing.

There is one date Microsoft 365 teams should have in the diary.

Microsoft blocked new enablement of Restricted SharePoint Search on 31 July 2026 and will retire it completely on 31 January 2027. There is no automatic migration to Restricted Content Discovery.

If Restricted SharePoint Search is the only thing keeping certain content away from Copilot, that needs dealing with before January.

The global average cost of a data breach has risen by 35% in a year to $6 million. In the UK, the average is now $4.17 million.

Organisations also take an average of 247 days to identify and contain a breach, reversing five years of improvement.
