The security advice used to be simple: switch on multi-factor authentication and choose text message verification.

Microsoft is now retiring its own SMS and voice authentication delivery.

Since 1 September 2026, users enabled for SMS or voice have been automatically enabled for passkeys and may be prompted to register one. From 1 February 2027, Microsoft-provided SMS and voice delivery will be retired.

Users who still rely on SMS or voice as their only MFA method will need to register a passkey before they can continue signing in.

Passed Cyber Essentials last year? You might not pass this year, even if nothing about your setup has changed.

The scheme got stricter in 2026. Two things are now automatic fails:

Multi-factor authentication switched off on a cloud service that offers it

High-risk or critical updates not applied within 14 days
