Video and motion
Motion directs the eye. A well-timed movement tells people where to look without a single word. Used badly, it just makes them dizzy. Timing is everything.

Clarity is a kindness. Confusing design makes people feel stupid, and nobody buys from a brand that makes them feel stupid. Make it obvious and they'll thank you with their attention.

Mobile-first isn't a trend, it's just where people are. If it doesn't work on a cracked phone screen on a train, it doesn't work. Design for the worst-case, not the showreel.

Your brand guidelines exist for the day you're not in the room. If the team can't apply them without you, they're not guidelines they're notes. Write them for other people.

This year, Design JD turns 20.

Twenty years of building brands, designing websites, and working with businesses we genuinely believe in. That kind of milestone felt like it should mean something beyond a logo with a "20" in it. So we've made 2026 a year of giving back.
My contribution? Climbing Everest. In a gym.

This May, I'm taking on a step machine challenge to climb the equivalent height of Mount Everest (8,849 metres) one step at a time. All to raise money for Croydon Vision, a chairty who encourage independence, confidence and personal development among the blind and the partially sighted

I'm not the only one at DJD getting involved either, our designer Gina is taking on Anthony Nolan's Knit Every Day in May challenge at the same time. Different challenges, same commitment.

Startups often treat brand identity as something to sort out once the product is working.

We'd push back on that.

Not because the logo matters more than the product it doesn't.
But because the thinking that produces a strong brand identity is the same thinking that sharpens a proposition.
Who is this for?
What do they believe?
Why would they choose you over the alternative?

Working through those questions visually forces clarity. And clarity, at the start of a business, is one of the most valuable things you can have.

A well-considered brand from the beginning also compounds. Every pitch, every piece of content, every customer interaction builds on the same foundation. Starting scrappy means rebuilding later usually at exactly the moment when time and budget are most stretched.

Get the brand thinking right early. The rest of the work gets easier.

Conversion isn't a trick. It's removing friction until the obvious choice becomes the easy one. If your site converts badly, look for the moment people hesitate then delete it.
