Agency brands tend to shoot for stark minimalism with their own branding to avoid conflicting with their client projects…

But this ends up drowning an industry in the same thoughtless logos, boring sans-serifs and sterile colour palettes.

In a deliberate rejection of this trend, I designed my buddy Kevin Barry O’Mara’s agency to breathe fresh air into this tired void.

A wordmark steeped in meaning, a brave colour palette, and refreshing type system gives KBO all the foundations to become a truly memorable marketing agency.

Stoked to play a small part in Kev’s story 💪🏼

Why are agency brands so boring?

I met my mate Kev when I used to work in marketing where we’d wrestle with our clients daily to properly invest in brand.

Thankfully, he understands the importance of it so I got the biggest pleasure of designing a mini brand for his digital marketing agency 💃

While the industry is packed with boring 3-letter wordmarks, sterile colour palettes and soulless type systems, we did the opposite.

Pumped to see the growth of Kev’s agency - give him a follow if you wanna learn more about digital advertising 💪🏼

One of the biggest misconceptions around brand 🤦🏻‍♂️

The term ‘brand’ gets chucked around all the time to mean everything from a logo to an identity system to a product.

A brand is none of those things 😤

A brand is a person’s gut feeling towards a product, service or company.

All of those things people mistake a brand for - like logo design, identity, product, etc. - are levers to pull to help influence your audience’s gut feeling towards your business.

It’s our role as brand designers to properly understand our client’s target audience, what problem they solve for them, and how to pull the right levers to make them convert.

So the next time someone asks you “can you just design my logo?” - send them this vid 🤓

Colour has no meaning 😤

It only takes on meaning based on the context in which it’s used.

That’s why whenever I design a brand, colour is what I decide on last 🙇🏻‍♂️

By experimenting with different hues and palettes on the assets I’ve already designed (logos, type, compositions, etc.), I can be more certain of the feeling that colour brings to the brand.

Colour isn’t an exact science, it’s more of a relationship between the colour and its surroundings.

The single best day of my life by MILES 💗

Here are some of my favourite pics from our wedding day as well as most of the assets I designed for it - brand marks, logotypes, invites, menus, signage, beer mats, etc.

The first thing I made was an organic, thistle graphic (cause my wife’s Scottish) which featured a couple of subtle Easter eggs only we knew were there - both of our initials plus a love heart (check slide 4).

You can also see how I lino cut and printed it on every single one of our invites as well as how it was used for signage. We even printed it on the wall of Lauren’s childhood home haha (slide 17).

But I think my favourite design was the J + L + infinity symbol ambigram which got peppered around most assets lol. I love that thing. HUGE shoutout to my boy Cj Cawley | Graphic Designer for turning into a wooden reality 🥹

The whole plan for our wedding was to feel natural and human but a little elevated which I feel comes across well (I’m a bit biased). It was so much fun to work on. Biggest and best client ever 💚

Your brand isn’t what you say it is, it’s what your audience says it is 😳

But by using devices like colour, type and layout, you’re able to nudge their opinion closer to what you want it to be 🥳

So the next time you’re deciding on these elements, make sure you pick them verrrrrry carefully 🤓

I took massive inspo for this video from .single.letter on TikTok. Go check out his stuff - brilliantly insightful, borderline ASMR deep dives on design.

Is logo design really that hard? 🤨

If AI can spit one out in seconds and all the “best” ones are really simple, it shouldn’t be that hard… right?

Finding the right balance of story and simplicity is what makes a logo good and sometimes it takes a load of iteration to find it.

For example, this project for Kohlben Vodden, took nearly 100 attempts 🫠 but it was worth every second.

Which direction would you pick? ↓↓↓

I presented these this week to a premium stone mason based in Australia - a studio focused on crafting elegant, timeless and refined solutions for their clients.

Direction 1 is designed to feel European, artisan and opulent.

Direction 2 is made to feel editorial, architectural and luxurious.

Both serve the brief but focus on different elements of the brand.

Lmk which you’d go for? 🤔
