Yesterday was a reminder that technology only works if people know how to use it.

I was asked by a neighbour to help an elderly gentleman whose home phone had suddenly stopped working after receiving a new broadband router.

When I arrived, there was no dial tone at the phone socket. His broadband had been migrated from Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) to SOGEA, which means the traditional telephone line is switched off and calls are made through the router instead.

Like many people, he had simply been sent a new router with very little understanding of what had changed or what needed to be plugged in where.

After a bit of detective work to identify his broadband provider, a quick call to their support team got the phone port activated. A simple RJ11 lead into the router, and all three of his cordless phones sprang back into life.

The bigger concern was that his Careline emergency alarm had also stopped working.

Thankfully, his neighbour had already contacted Careline. While I was there, a member of their team arrived with a mobile SIM-based replacement unit. She knew exactly what she was doing, explained everything clearly and patiently to the gentleman, and had the service restored quickly. It was genuinely first-class service and a credit to the organisation.

What worries me is how many people are going through exactly the same migration.

Across the UK there will be hundreds, if not thousands, of vulnerable customers moving from traditional phone lines to digital voice services. Simply posting out a router with a leaflet isn’t enough for many people, particularly those who rely on their home phone or emergency alarm.

In this case, a caring neighbour noticed something was wrong, Careline responded brilliantly, and we were able to get everything working again.

Not everyone will be that fortunate.

As our phone network continues to change, we need to make sure no one is left behind.

Sometimes, a little human help is just as important as the technology itself.
