The VPN age verification issue will have a great effect on connectivity in business. Site to Site VPN, Remote Desktop etc.

You may have to prove your age to use these.
It’s a can of worms opening again for businesses.

Critics are warning against proposals to restrict VPN access — but will the plans actually become law?

People buy from people… or do they?

We have a Supplier coming to see us tomorrow. It doesn’t happen very often now — most things are done by email, online demos or Zoom calls.

It got me thinking about how different things used to be.

When I was younger, we had a family farm. One day, a new sales rep arrived looking for ā€œthe bossā€. My father and I were laying blocks for a new pig building — muddy boots, sleeves rolled up, just getting on with the job.

The rep walked straight past us.

After wandering around the yard for a bit, he came back and asked, ā€œI’m looking for the boss.ā€

My father smiled and said, ā€œYou’ve found him.ā€

There was a brief pause. And a bit of embarrassment.

The rep hadn’t meant any harm. He was just looking for a title, not a person. On that farm, the boss was the one laying the blocks.

That moment stayed with me.

Over the years, we’ve gained convenience but lost connection.
Bank managers became apps.
Conversations became ticket numbers.
The milkman became a supermarket shelf.

At Rural Broadband, Michelle and I try hard to keep the human side.

There’s no call centre. When you ring, the phone comes through to one or other of us. There’s no ticketing system — just emails that we read and reply to as quickly as we can.

If you’ve got a question, we’re here.
If you’ve got a technical problem, we’re here for that too.

Yes, we’ll jump on Zoom if it helps — but we like to have a proper conversation first. To understand what you actually need, or what’s actually going wrong, before the buzzwords start flying.

Because jargon doesn’t fix problems. Listening does.

Maybe ask yourself — does your business still value real conversations?
