The easiest way to start using AI? Begin with a real problem.

Tom Froggatt, founder of Versapia.ai, didn’t begin by choosing a particular tool or chasing the latest technology. He identified three problems within his business and asked AI how he could approach solving them.

AI can even help you learn how to use it. Start a conversation, explain what you’re trying to achieve and experiment with the suggestions.

You don’t need to understand everything before getting started. You just need a clear problem to solve.

When are staffing costs eating into margin?

Which promotions drive profit, not just sales?

Because having data is one thing.

Knowing what to do with it is where the value starts.

Don’t just measure how busy you are. Understand how profitable you are.

If a process is already working, it’s easy to leave it as it is.

But small improvements can unlock much bigger opportunities.

If a better quoting process saves the team time, could they complete more quotes? Could they take on more work? Could they introduce services they didn’t previously have the capacity to offer?

The exciting part isn’t just making a process faster. It’s understanding the wider value that improvement creates for the business.

For one company, the problem wasn’t the process or the technology. It was communication.

Introducing a couple of focused meetings each week, with clear agendas and specific conversations, helped remove the pipeline blockage and let work move forward.

Sometimes, the most effective solution isn’t complicated. It’s simply creating the right opportunities for people to talk.

What’s one tool everyone should use when designing and innovating?

A whiteboard and marker. Simple, but effective.

It can be tempting to jump straight into finding a solution, but sometimes the best ideas come from stepping back, gathering people around a whiteboard and working through the challenge together.

Virtual whiteboards have their place, but there’s still something powerful about a group of people sharing ideas, moving things around and making changes in real time.

Sometimes, the simplest tools are still the best.

AI can deliver impressive results, but impressive doesn’t always mean accurate.

When one system appeared almost too successful, it took a human to stop and ask: “Hang on, is something not quite right here?”

That instinct prevented a product from reaching farmers while misidentifying plants in the field, potentially causing serious damage to their crops.

AI is a powerful tool, but people still need to be in the loop to question the results, apply real-world judgement and make sure everything is safe, sensible and right.
