𝗔𝗜 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘆: 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵?

Imagine: an AI produces a strategic report in minutes. Perfectly structured. Coherent arguments. Credible figures. Convincing conclusions.

But who verified the figures? Who checked the sources? Who can guarantee the conclusions are accurate?

We are building machines capable of producing information at extraordinary speed. But our ability to verify that information is not keeping pace.

This is what I call "verification debt": each unchecked document can become the source of another. Each error can be repeated. Each fragile hypothesis can gradually be treated as established fact.

The quality of expression does not guarantee the quality of reasoning. An answer can be fluent and wrong. A line of reasoning can seem coherent while resting on false premises.

Producing is not verifying. Verifying is not understanding. And understanding is not necessarily deciding correctly.

What good is an AI capable of producing everything if we gradually lose the ability to verify what it claims?

"We can cross countries without moving inwardly, or walk a few metres and change profoundly."

Our cars count kilometres. Our phones record our movements. Our watches calculate our steps. But no device measures the distance between who we were when we left and who we have become when we arrived.

One traveller crosses continents and returns with his certainties intact. Another never leaves his town, but a single encounter forces him to reconsider everything. Which one truly travelled?

Imagine: someone is sitting in their living room. Three metres away, their phone. They know they should call someone. Acknowledge a mistake. Ask for forgiveness. Or simply say: "I miss you." Those three metres sometimes require more courage than thousands of kilometres.

The greatest journey may not be the one that takes us furthest from our starting point. It is the one that changes the way we see the world.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀?

We blame AI for making creation too easy. But have we asked the reverse question?

For centuries, we have admired artists who consumed themselves to create — sometimes to the point of exhaustion, addiction or destruction.

AI now forces us to reconsider not only what it means to create, but also the price we are willing to make the creator pay.

A word processor never turned all its users into novelists. A camera in every phone never turned every owner into a photographer. The tool makes something possible. It does not create the desire.

Being able to write is not yet wanting to write. Wanting to write is not yet becoming a writer.

What if we used the time gained through AI not to produce more, but to preserve more? To sleep. Walk. Love. Read. Observe. Produce nothing. And perhaps, precisely because of that, continue to create.

Create more or live more? That may be the essential question.

Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has warned its future investors that advanced AI systems could create "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity."

An IPO prospectus. Not a research paper. Not a conference. A financial document.

Self-preservation. Alignment faking. Situational awareness. Bypassing oversight mechanisms. Recursive self-improvement. Anthropic's researchers have separately observed some of these behaviours in controlled experiments.

But no overall loss of control has been observed. Existential risk remains a prospective scenario.

The real change is institutional: a research hypothesis has become a risk disclosed to shareholders.

On this subject, we must avoid two pitfalls: fascination and fear. And preserve what remains essential: our ability to understand, to question and to exercise critical thinking.

Changing places isn't always changing lives.

We can leave a place… without that place leaving us. We can distance ourselves from someone… and keep talking to them inside for years. We can close a door… and discover, years later, that it had stayed open somewhere within us.

There are the places we inhabit. And there are the places that inhabit us.

No GPS measures the inner distance.

We can inherit a wound without being bound to pass it on. We can receive a fear without having to teach it to our children. We can come from a story without being condemned to repeat it.

Perhaps the question isn't "How do I forget?" but "What place will I give today to what belongs to yesterday?"

📝 Before Négritude, the Nardal sisters were already circulating ideas

This Saturday morning, at the MansA – Maison des Mondes Africains in Paris, I attended a discussion dedicated to the Nardal sisters, as part of the N.A.R.D.A.L. programme created by Maboula Soumahoro.

My daughter, Léa Mormin-Chauvac, journalist and co-author of the documentary "The Nardal Sisters, the Forgotten Women of Négritude", was one of the speakers, alongside historian of ideas Ève Gianoncelli.

Seven Martinican sisters. An apartment in Clamart. Books, translations, encounters between the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and the United States. And ideas circulating long before a concept crystallised them.

What I take away:

Ideas have a history. But they also have a geography, networks and go-betweens. Before the text, there is a conversation. Before the theory, a circulation. Before the concept, someone who opens a door.

It takes someone who invites. Someone who translates. Someone who lends a book. Someone who introduces two people. Someone who listens. Someone who challenges. And sometimes, decades later, someone who goes back into the archives to find what history had left aside.

An autopilot takes you where it was programmed to go.
A partner helps you get where YOU chose to go.

The difference? It isn't the tool. It's the question you ask: "Think for me" or "Help me think better"?

Think for myself. Decide for myself. With AI, never in its place. ✅

Write my messages. Summarise my documents. Prepare my meetings. Analyse my data. Find arguments. Explain the news. Tell me what I should think…

Convenient? Absolutely.
But at what point did I stop thinking for myself?

There is a fundamental difference between getting an answer and having learned to build one.

Two people use the same tool. The first to never think again. The second to challenge and improve their own reasoning. In one case: cognitive crutch. In the other: intellectual partner.

If AI disappeared tomorrow, could you still explain why you think what you think?

Reflect. Compare. Decide. Think for myself. ✅

A relationship begins when two freedoms agree to build.

It only takes one person to say "I". But it takes at least two to truly say "us". And it's not enough for two people to be in the same place, to meet, or even to love each other. To build an "us", two freedoms must agree to build.

I can open a door. But I cannot force someone to walk through it. I can create the conditions for "us". But I cannot create "us" on my own.

How can two "I"s give birth to an "us"… without disappearing? No longer "Enter my story", but "What story can we write together?"

Perhaps the real question isn't "Do we love each other?" but "What are we building with that love?"

What if everything we know suddenly became inaccessible?

Not destroyed. Not censored. Simply inaccessible — because the servers, networks and infrastructures we depend on stopped working.

This is the question my novel L'Archéologue du Savoir (The Knowledge Archaeologist) asks. And it is the question I revisit today in a new article on the EKM Conseils blog, tracing a fascinating literary genealogy: from Forster in 1909 to Orwell, from Bradbury to Asimov, from Miller to Dartnell.

Three movements, three verbs: select (ARCHE), materialize (TITAN), decentralize (PHOENIX).

And at the center, a paradox: can we use artificial intelligence to prepare a world in which it might no longer function?
