Growing Up in the ’90s With a Windows PC 🖥️💿
Growing up in the ’90s, having a Windows computer in the house felt like having a doorway to another world.
You’d sit down in front of that big beige monitor, turn on the computer, hear it come to life, and wait patiently for Windows to load. No massive digital library. No downloading a 100 GB game. You had a CD-ROM, a floppy disk, and hopefully enough space on the hard drive. 😂
And when you finally got the game running, that was when the fun started.
Sometimes your friends would come over and everyone would crowd around one computer. One person had the keyboard while everyone else shouted:
“GO LEFT!”
“WATCH OUT!”
“MY TURN NEXT!”
Other times, it was your brother, sister, mom, dad, or cousins sitting beside you trying to figure out a game together. You might spend hours stuck on one level because there was no YouTube tutorial to immediately show you the answer.
You just kept trying.
And somehow, that made finally beating it feel even better.
Games like DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, RollerCoaster Tycoon, Age of Empires, SimCity, The Sims, Command & Conquer and countless others weren’t just software to us.
They became memories.
The funny thing is, when I look back now, I don’t only remember the games.
I remember the people sitting beside me.
I remember laughing with friends, fighting over whose turn it was, discovering secrets together and hearing someone yell from across the room when something crazy happened.
Technology has come a long way since those old Windows computers.
But sometimes I’d give anything to sit in front of that big beige monitor again, put in a CD-ROM, grab a chair for a friend and hear:
“Alright… my turn after you.”
Those were good times. ❤️🎮
