Freight. Receiving. Warehousing. Reimbursable expenses. Each one is a real cost to your firm, and each one tends to get absorbed quietly the moment a client pushes back.

Across a year of projects, those absorbed costs add up to real margin.

• Do you know your true cost per project hour, including overhead?

The Learn to Love High Point Market Tour, Saturday, October 17, is built for first-timers and newer designers. Wendy Woloshchuk and Jennifer Tampasis lead you through at least five designer-friendly showrooms, with private tours, insider tips, and a shuttle between stops. The most expensive line in a design contract is often the one that isn't there.

Design projects run on multiple vendors, layered timelines, deposits, retainers, and change orders. When the structure behind them is loose, risk piles up in predictable places:

1. Payment terms that don't say what happens when a payment is late
2. Change orders approved verbally and never documented
3. Retainers without clear rules on how they're applied or refunded
4. Vendor responsibilities left undefined when something arrives damaged
