Out of office this week — I'll be in Toronto for DesignThinkers. 🎨

DesignThinkers is one of my favourite events of the year. Two days of talks, ideas, and being in a room full of people who care deeply about design and where it's going. The kind of event that sends you home with a full brain and a long list of things to think about.

If you're going to be there, come say hi.

Back at my desk Thursday, Oct 22nd — emails and messages will be answered then.

The Design Horror Files, File #2: The Phantom Logo. 👻

You have a logo. But somewhere between your designer sending it over and you using it everywhere, something went wrong.

The version on your website is too small and blurry. The one on your business card got squished because it didn't fit the space. The one your printer used came back stretched horizontally because someone resized it by dragging a corner without holding Shift. The one you use on Instagram has a white box around it because it was saved as a JPEG instead of a PNG.

Every version is slightly different. None of them are right.

This is The Phantom Logo — a logo that technically exists but has never been used correctly, in any format, anywhere.

It happens because most designers hand over a single file without explaining what it's for, what formats exist, or how to use them. So clients improvise. And the logo quietly becomes something different every time it appears.

The fix: a complete logo suite — every version you actually need, in every format, with a one-page guide that explains exactly which to use where.

That's what should come at the end of every brand identity project. If it didn't come with yours, that's worth addressing.

New article in Brainz Magazine, and this one is for every regulated health and wellness professional who's ever felt their college guidelines and marketing were in conflict.

You can't post glowing client testimonials. You can't promise outcomes. You have to be careful about language that implies results. And it can start to feel like the rules exist to make you invisible.

Here's what I want you to know: your constraints are also your differentiator.

Operating within a professional framework with a college, a designation, and ethical standards governing your practice is itself a trust signal most industries can't claim. The problem isn't that you can't market the way other industries do. It's that most regulated professionals have never been shown how to market in a way that uses their standards as a strength.

That's what this piece is about. Four pillars of ethical visibility marketing that work within your professional guidelines, not around them. Marketing that builds trust because it doesn't cut corners.

Ethical visibility bridges your expertise and the person who needs it. It doesn't compromise your standards. It expresses them.

Welcome to The Design Horror Files. 🎃

All October, I'm sharing the scariest things I see in branding and website design — the things that happen when you don't know any better, and the simple fixes that make them go away.

First up: The Franken-Website.

It started innocently enough. You built a website quickly because you needed to get online. Then you added a service page yourself. A staff member updated the about section. You hired a freelancer to fix a broken link, and they changed the font while they were in there. A new associate joined, and their bio got added in a completely different style. Someone embedded a booking widget that matches nothing else on the site.

Seven years later, you have a website built by five different people, each with a different idea of what your business should look and feel like.

The colours don't match. The fonts shift from page to page. No one can tell who you serve or what makes you different. And you've been meaning to fix it for three years, but every time you open it, you don't know where to start.

The good news: this is fixable. And it doesn't require starting from scratch as much as you think.

It requires a foundation — a clear visual identity that every future decision can refer back to. Once that exists, every new page, every new bio, every new service has something coherent to anchor to.

New article just published in Brainz Magazine. 🌹

Every practitioner has had this experience at least once. A potential client calls, asks what a session costs, and books whoever's cheapest. You're left wondering whether your rates are too high — or worse, whether you should lower them to compete.

Here's the thing: the problem usually isn't your pricing.

It's that nothing in how your practice presents itself gave that patient a reason to choose you for anything other than cost.

Patients who shop on price aren't being difficult. They're being rational, given the information available. When every practitioner's website looks roughly the same, price becomes the only variable left to compare.

In this piece, I walk through the four-part approach that changes that — and what tends to shift in a practice when positioning is genuinely clear.

If you've been fielding calls that start with "how much do you charge" more than you'd like, this one is for you.

I'm excited to finally share something close to my heart! This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to mentor a talented group of three recent graduates and students through the RGD's Project-Based Mentorship Program.

Their challenge? To develop a visual identity and awareness campaign that transforms the conversation around C-PTSD and PTSD. The goal was to make these topics feel more approachable—shedding the clinical, overwhelming facade and adding a more human touch, especially for those who need support most.

Enter "Living in Colour," the brilliant outcome of their hard work and creativity.

I couldn't be prouder of this dynamic team. They collaborated across different time zones, bravely stepped outside their comfort zones, and tackled a sensitive subject with both courage and empathy. Their dedication truly shone through!

At its best, information design is all about connection — meeting individuals where they are, bridging the gap between those seeking help and the resources available, and transforming complicated subjects into something that feels safe to approach.

This experience reinforced how vital mentorship is. It's not just about guiding the mentees; it enriches the work itself.

Congratulations to the team! You’ve created something that truly matters and can make a difference in people's lives!

When Susan first came to me, she had a problem many people who have been building something for years eventually face.

Her brand had grown in every direction. A YouTube channel for spiritual teaching. Another for political predictions. A community. Classes. An app in development. An LLC under one name, a website under another, social media under a third.

The work had expanded well beyond what the original name could hold. And she knew it.

She said something that has stayed with me: psychic medium is one room inside the house. It isn't the whole house anymore.

So we built the house.

The Susan Lynn brand refresh is a full house of brands — a primary identity anchored in her name alone, with a visual system designed to hold everything that flows from it. Sub-brands and initiatives that feel related, consistent, and unmistakably hers, without flattening what makes each one distinct.

The visual direction was inspired by her deep connection to the ocean. Warm sand, soft coral, calm water tones — the feeling of being grounded near something vast and unhurried. Not mystical for its own sake. Settled. Approachable. Like sitting down with someone who helps you remember what you already know.

That's always been Susan's gift. Her brand finally looks like it.

Welcome to the new Susan Lynn. 🌊

In less than two weeks, I'll be in Toronto for@rgdcanada DesignThinkers. 🎨

It's one of those events I look forward to every year — two days of talks, ideas, and being in a room full of people who genuinely love this work. The kind of conference that sends you home with a full brain and a long list of things to sit with.

If you're going to be there, let me know. I'd love to connect in person.

When a clinic or practice gets genuinely clear about who they serve—and builds a brand identity and website that honestly reflect that—a consistent pattern tends to follow.

Fewer wrong inquiries. More patients who arrive already feeling like a fit. Referrals that get more precise. And one shift most practitioners don't anticipate.

Swipe through to see all four.
