The more we learn about pollinators, the more remarkable they become. 🐝

New research published in Science has shown that bumblebees are capable of something once thought largely reserved for animals with much larger brains: solving a completely new problem.

Researchers presented bees with an artificial flower containing a food reward that was out of reach. The solution? Move a small ball into position, climb onto it, and use it as a platform to reach the flower.

The bees weren't specifically taught to do that.

They figured it out.

Even when researchers changed the experiment so the flower was hidden from view, many bees still moved the ball to the correct location, evidence that their behaviour was goal-directed rather than simply instinctive.

Why does this matter?

Because pollinators aren't simply background players in our environment. They're extraordinarily complex creatures and an essential part of the ecosystems that produce our food.

As we think about food security, climate resilience and growing more food closer to home, we also need to think about creating spaces where pollinators can thrive.

A greenhouse can help extend a growing season.

But a resilient food system extends well beyond the greenhouse walls.

Sometimes the smallest creatures are doing some of the most important work.
