Impact of International Student Caps on Canadian Colleges and Rural Communities- An Opinion

(The following represents my own thoughts and perspectives and are not to be taken out of context. 6 minute read.) I have worked for Selkirk College as an Instructor since 2018. I joined the ranks of Post Secondary workers after having worked almost 10 years in the tremendously impoverished public school system - a school system that I'd seen dwindle in resources for the full span of my childrens' K -12 experiences (2000-2019)....

I had the privilege of working with Ben Postmus of Diverse Family Roots Society at the BC Affordable Housing conference yesterday. We worked with a motivated and focused room full of people to develop their PATH towards appropriate, affordable, accessible housing for themselves and their family members. What an absolute pleasure.

Image description: graphic recording titled PATHways to HOME. Drawing is done in markers with text bubbles of what participants said. Small cartoon people are sprinkled throughout the image, brightly coloured in marker. PM me for full text readable by screen reading software.

(The following represents my own thoughts). Each year there are a percentage of students in post secondary who go through the process of gaining accommodations for their coursework. This is not specific to any one institution and is expected practice across all colleges and universities in Canada. Students are applying for accommodation in greater numbers (Copfer Terreberry, 2017) and discovering that the process and practice can, in some cases, take more time and have different barriers than if they hadn't applied for them at all (Bartolo, et al., 2023, Dolmage, 2017, and Parsons, et al., 2021)....

Folks who have known me a long time will know this is a homecoming of sorts. Between 2001 and 2008 I owned and operated a quilt-based business with a machine like this one at the heart of it. This HQ Sixteen was my dear Mom’s machine which has been waiting to be set up for several months. I miss my Mom an awful lot, and am grateful for the legacy of doing something that we both loved. Got it up and running yesterday, worked out a few little set-up links, and have my first quilt on it in progress! Image description: centred against a blue wall is the front handles and display screen of a longarm quilting machine, held at arm’s length by Lisa (who is behind the camera. A cream, green, and blue striped quilt is mounted on the machine.

Got to spend the first part of the week doing one of my favorite things, graphic recording. Working with Selkirk College in Nelson and a whole lot of caring and motivated folks, we closed a three-year project regarding the experience of homelessness in our region. This is not the end, though. Many projects were born out of this collaborative work, many that will live on in our communities. Image description: Lisa standing on the right, facing the camera, smiling. Behind her is a large-scale graphic recording, most of which cannot be read in the photo. The trees, mountains, and sky are visible behind her, through the window.

I finally sat down to write a little about this. A truly bright spot for me, one that has been tremendously meaningful.

A profound thing happened in my life last week. I was the lucky recipient of a SCOPE award – recognition from the Selkirk College Faculty Association (SCFA) Standing Committee On Professional…

Doing a tear-down renovation of the lovely little Boler we’ve had for 9 years. She’s a 1975, soon-to-be-dubbed Julius. Drew has been busy building a brand!new!frame! And I’ve been doing body work, interior refresh, and new upholstery (wait until you see the awning!) We’ve decided to convert completely to electric, so more updates are forthcoming.

I’m so excited that is is going to bloom! Dad gave me this beauty 2? 3? years ago and it’s not really progressed under my care until recently. The buds are growing fast, maybe we’ll have flowers soon!
