There's always someone saying the answer is more content. Post every day. Create more pages. More blogs. Feed the algorithm. Don't let people forget about you. And that makes a lot of sense for someone whose full time job is making content.

But most business owners have an actual business to run.

I'd rather see a business share two or three honest things a week than seven posts made because the calendar had empty spaces. Posting more doesn't work if you don't have something to say. If there's no point to the post, skip it.

I've been doing this for a pretty long time now.

And I've believed that if I did good work it would speak for itself. I liked that idea because it let me stay quiet. I didn't have to promote myself or put my opinions out there. I could do the work and hope people noticed.

And that's been a mistake. Good work can't speak for itself if people never get a chance to see it. I've missed opportunities. I've lost clients. I've watched business owners get taken in by marketing noise from people who were really good at selling panic.

I'm always going to be more comfortable doing the work than talking about myself but I've been doing this long enough to have opinions I think are worth sharing and I've spent years telling clients they can't expect people to understand their business if they never talk about it. I should take my own advice. I'm going to continue to try to put myself out there more and talk about he work and promote what I do. Even when it feels uncomfortable.

International Read Comics in Public Day is one of those oddly specific days I can actually get behind.

I've been a comic book fan for pretty much as long as I can remember. From old stories to new stories, ridiculous crossovers to classic events, single issues huge omnibus collections that weigh way more than they should. I've always loved the mix of art and storytelling, the way a few panels can build a world, and the way, every now and then, a few panels can change this one for the better.

Comics have been one of the things that have stuck with me my entire life. I read them a lot as a nerdy kid. I still read them as a nerdy adult. And I don't think that will change any time soon.

So for International Read Comics in Public Day I figured I'd actually follow the instructions for once and take one outside. Not everything has to be about work. Sometimes it's nice to just sit down with Batman once in a while.

Sometimes a business grows faster than its brand does. And that's when a lot of business owners get stuck.

That's when it's time for a conversation.

What's changed? Who are you working with now? What are you trying to be known for? What feels right and what doesn't anymore? Conversations build clarity and once the business is clearer the design decisions usually get a lot easier to make.

Sometimes that leads to a new logo. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it means a new website and sometimes the site is fine but the content needs to catch up. Sometimes the visual identity needs work and sometimes the real problem is the core message. But however the work takes shape the first step is always the same. A conversation.

If everything's important nothing is.

The easiest place to see that in design is probably typography. If every line is big, bold and screaming your eye has no idea where to start. A headline only works because something else is smaller. A subhead only works because it supports the headline instead of fighting with it. Good hierarchy gives people a clear path through the information.

But it goes way beyond type.

You see the same problem when there are too many competing images. Too many colours. Too many shapes or too many things packed in one space. You see it in websites that try to say everything on the homepage. You see it in ads that are trying to explain five different ideas at once. You even see it in messaging when every point is treated like THE point.

That's when design starts to feel busy. Not because there's too much information necessarily but because there isn't enough priority.

Good design is about deciding what matters most, what's needed to support it and what can wait. Sometimes the strongest thing you can do for a design is take something out.

is one of those clients that really shows what can happen when a brand is allowed to breath and grow properly over time.

Chance first came to me back in 2018 with a rough logo sketch and an idea for a hockey development business. From there we developed the logo and initial visual identity and launched the first website in a pretty tight tow week window. And then we kept working and building the brand as the business grew. Since then that's included ongoing graphic design, marketing materials, website updates and a. full website refresh as CrossIce became more established.

What I like most about this brand is that the original idea never had to be thrown away and replaced with something completely different. The brand just kept getting stronger as the business did.

CrossIce Developments has now grown into one of Central Alberta's most recognized hockey development companies and I'm proud that Dynamic Graphics and Design has been a part of that journey since the beginning.

There's a scene in Mad Men where Don Draper says advertising is based on one thing. Happiness. That whether it's the beer we drink or the car we drive advertising is really just selling us how we want to feel.

But I don't think that's true anymore.

Most marketing now is designed to make us feel bad. About how we're doing. About our bodies. About our businesses. About how we think and the decisions we make.

There's always something we're getting wrong or wrong with the world. We're behind. We're not doing enough. We're not using the right tools. Our website is outdated or our SEO is broken.

Fear works. Make someone uncomfortable enough and they'll start looking for a way out of that feeling. That's just not how I want to do business.

So in case no one's told you today. You're okay. You're going to be okay. And you're doing just fine.

I've heard some version of "I know what I want I just need someone to build it" more times than I can count over the years. And sometimes that's completely fair. Sometimes the idea really is already figured out and what's really needed is someone with the technical skill to pull it together properly.

But I don't think that's where a good designer brings their biggest value to the table.

Whether I'm working on a logo, a brand, or a website a big part of the job is asking questions before anything gets built. What are we trying to accomplish? Who are we trying to reach? What's confusing right now? Is this idea really solving the problem or do we even know what the problem is?

A business owner obviously knows their business a hundred times better than I ever will. But I also bring years of experience in branding, logo design, strategic website design and SEO. And figuring out how all of those pieces work together. The best projects usually happen when both sides bring what they know and there's room enough to challenge ideas, ask better questions and actually think through the problem.

Sometimes the original idea is the right one. Sometimes it changes. A lot.

If all you need is someone to build exactly what you've already planned there are lots of people who can do that and do it well. I just don't think that's where I do my best work.

I don't think good branding needs to shout to get noticed.

A lot of businesses (and designers) seem to think good branding means making the logo bigger. Or using more colour. Or more graphics. Or more words. A lot of work out there right now is over designed and overly clever. A lot of it is advertising the designer more than the brand. Sometimes that works. A lot of times it doesn't.

I think the stronger approach is usually the quieter one.

Good branding should feel recognizable before anyone even sees the logo. The colours. The typography. The spacing and the imagery. All of those things should work together in a way that gives the brand its own feel.

That's one of the things about the work we've done with Camrose Energy Corporation that I really like. The brand is bright and recognizable but it doesn't try to force itself into every corner of the design. It already feels like Camrose Energy before you even start to think about why.

That's the kind of branding I like.

I'll never understand why people think being good at something means instantly having all the answers. Who does? I know I don't. Sometimes a client will ask me a questions and I honestly just don't know the answer. Sometimes the best answer is "give me a day or two to look into that."

There's a lot of pressure in branding and marketing. In websites and SEO. Pressure to sound certain all the time. To have the quick answer. To be an expert in every new trend or change and to make them sound simple.

I don't really buy into that.

I'd rather take the extra time and give someone an honest answer than bluff my way through something just to sound like the smartest person in the room. I think that's part of giving good advice. I think it requires experience, judgement and curiosity and it means being able to say "I don't know but let me figure it out".

I don't know everything. I'm not going to pretend I do.
