What if the smallest parts of a hi-fi component are the ones nobody talks about?

The Sparkler Audio S513i is full of thoughtful details. Its top panel is finished in handmade Japanese paper, available in seven colours (white, cream, plum, sky-blue, purple, olive and beige) or in a grey-smoke monotone. Volume is controlled by a proprietary 32-step electronic attenuator with no mechanical contacts.

For input selection, inert-gas-sealed reed switches with ruthenium contacts are chosen for durability and reliable long-term contact; the gas protects the switching mechanism. The chassis, spacers, bolts and nuts are stainless steel. There’s just a power switch on the main unit; the supplied remote handles the rest, with coloured LEDs indicating inputs one (red), two (green) and three (blue).

These details form the invisible backbone of a high-fidelity system: fewer unnecessary contacts, and fewer opportunities to compromise the signal.

How much of a hi-fi component is still made by hand? For Sparkler Audio, the answer is at the heart of the work.

Founded by Kazutoshi Tsukahara on 1 February 2013 in Beppu, Oita, Japan, Sparkler remains a small workshop, exporting to more than 25 countries. Its story began earlier: in 2010, Tsukahara worked with respected Japanese company 47 Laboratory, designing an FM tuner and CD player. In 2011, he established his own workshop, 47 Treasure, in Yamanashi, before formally founding Sparkler Audio.

Today, products are developed and handmade in-house, with no outsourced design or manufacture. Sparkler deliberately avoids mass production, seeing the finishing of each unit as completing a work, not manufacturing a product.

The S505 “Flügel II” is a 25-watt power amplifier with a volume control and pure analogue power supply. Sparkler’s philosophy says it all: “Born from the heart, music must reach the heart.”

Twenty-five watts. Five thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars. Here's why that's not a typo.

So, what does the number really tell you? Watts-per-dollar is a blunt instrument: it tells you how much power an amplifier can produce, not how carefully that power is delivered or how cleanly the circuit behaves at normal listening levels.

The Sparkler Audio S513i “pastoral” control amplifier and S514i “rhapsody” dual-monaural power amplifiers are $5,750.00 AUD at Toma Audio. The S514i delivers a maximum of 25 watts into 8 ohms. These fully discrete, current-mode designs are built one at a time in a Japanese workshop.

Is it a universal plug-and-play recommendation? No. Speaker sensitivity, impedance, listening distance and room size all matter. But with a genuinely efficient, easy-to-drive loudspeaker, 25 watts can be entirely sufficient for a normal living room.

Could a more efficient speaker improve both your vinyl system and your home cinema experience?

Could a speaker’s horn be doing more than shaping its distinctive look?

It is an acoustic impedance transformer: it couples the compression driver to the air more effectively, increasing output while reducing amplifier demand. Think of it as using a lever instead of pushing a heavy door with one finger: greater sensitivity, effortless dynamics and more headroom.

Klipsch Tractrix horn geometry also controls dispersion, directing energy towards the listening area. Placement still matters, so auditioning remains essential.

Why does a system sound strained when the music gets demanding, even when the volume doesn’t seem extreme?

The answer may be speaker sensitivity: how loudly a speaker plays at one metre with one watt of power.

Klipsch Heresy IV and Forte IV are rated at 99 dB, the RP-8000F II at 98 dB, and the Klipschorn at an extraordinary 105 dB. A typical bookshelf speaker sits around 85–88 dB.

A 10 dB increase in sensitivity requires roughly one-tenth of the amplifier power. In practical terms, a 99 dB Klipsch speaker can need roughly one twenty-fifth of the power of an 85 dB speaker for a similar volume.

That means more headroom, effortless dynamics, sharper transient snap, a lower risk of clipping and a more relaxed presentation: the amplifier is loafing rather than straining. Room size, listening distance, impedance and musical peaks still matter, of course.
