She was two keystrokes away from losing everything.
It started with a pop-up on a website she used all the time. Her account was locked, it said, here is a number to call. So she called it. The person on the phone was helpful. He just needed access to her computer to sort it out. Then he needed her to log in to her bank.
When her phone rang and she said her IT guy was calling, they told her not to answer. They said he would only make things worse.
At 8:41am the software install was flagged on her work-from-home computer. By 8:50am we had reached her through her husband, remoted in and blocked every keystroke on the machine. She had entered six of the eight digits.
The scammer's only question was why her keyboard had stopped working. She hung up.
Nine minutes, start to finish. Nothing lost.
If someone ever asks you to install remote access software over the phone, hang up and call us. Any hour. It costs a lot less than the alternative.
