Real or AI? These days you can’t always tell at a glance, and that’s exactly what attackers are counting on.

AI has made deception cheap and convincing: a cloned voice, a familiar face on video, a flawless email that knows just enough about you to seem legitimate. The old giveaways are disappearing clumsy grammar, odd phrasing, dodgy logos.

What hasn’t changed is that a short pause still beats a fast scam. Take a second to tell the difference.

Five habits worth building this month:
- Don’t trust a voice or face alone. Audio and video can be cloned convincingly now, so treat an urgent request as unverified until you’ve checked it another way.
- Check your privacy settings. The defaults weren’t chosen with you in mind, so take a second to decide who can see you.
- Call back on a number you trust. If a call or message pushes you to act fast, hang up and ring back on a number you already have, never the one they give you.
- Check what personal data you share with AI chatbots. Anything you paste in can be stored or exposed, so keep client details, credentials and sensitive data out of it.
- Take a second to check your AI answer. AI sounds just as confident when it’s wrong, so verify anything you’d act on before you rely on it.

Taking a second also means not taking your own cyber security on faith. The surest way to miss a gap is to let the people who built your systems be the only ones who check them, a bit like marking their own homework.

A second is a small price for staying secure.

You might have noticed some government websites were down this week, including Australia’s own cyber security agency.

The cause was a serious flaw in PHP, the software that quietly runs behind most websites. What makes this one different is how it was found. Part of the problem had been sitting unnoticed for years, until AI helped a researcher prove just how dangerous it was.

If your website is hosted with us, it’s already been updated and checked. Nothing you need to do. If it’s hosted somewhere else, it’s worth asking your provider to confirm it’s been sorted.

The result of not taking a moment can be devastating in some instances - just ask FIIG Securities. In February 2026, the Federal Court fined the Australian investment firm $2.5 million over cyber security failures that made a 2023 ransomware attack far worse, exposing data on around 18,000 clients. The regulator’s point was blunt: FIIG had security policies, it just hadn’t followed them, and getting it right would have cost a fraction of the penalty.

It was the first time an Australian financial services licensee was fined for cyber failures, and it won’t be the last.

The reassuring part is that the same small habits protect any business, and most of them take a second:
- Know your security policy. The rules only help if people follow them.
- Follow the process, don’t skip it. Shortcuts are how the gaps open up.
- Check before you click or send. The pause is still the best defence there is.
- Treat work data like it’s your own. The less of it left where it shouldn’t be, the less there is at risk.

None of this is board-level complexity. It’s everyday care, done consistently, by everyone.
Good habits take a second. Hard lessons take longer.

Still jumping on the free WiFi at your local cafe? A newly discovered security flaw is a good reason to stop.
It could let scammers create fake versions of trusted websites and software updates, and shared WiFi networks are where it’s easiest for them to pull off.

To stay safe:

1. Use your phone’s hotspot instead of free WiFi at cafes, airports and hotels
2. If you are on an untrusted network, ignore or cancel any prompts to install app updates
3. If you have to use public WiFi, do not use it to access critical sites like electronic banking or where sensitive business data is exposed.

For years, October has been about awareness. This year it’s about action.

Cyber Security Action Month made that shift on purpose: knowing the risks isn’t the same as reducing them. The difference between a business that gets hit and one that doesn’t is rarely knowledge, it’s whether a handful of basic things actually got done.

Here are a few habits worth building this month:
- Use a password manager. It makes long, unique passwords on every account realistic rather than a chore, and fills them in so no one is tempted to reuse.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication. One extra step at sign-in is what stops a stolen password from becoming a breach.
- Apply updates and back up your data. Updates close the holes attackers already know about - a working backup turns a worst-case day into a manageable setback rather than an expensive, sometimes unrecoverable mistake.
- Learn to recognise scams and report them. The best scams no longer look like scams, so slowing down for the one that feels off protects you, and reporting it protects others too.
- Think before you share on social media. Every post is a clue, and the less you hand over, the less there is to use against you.

Awareness tells you the risk is there, action is what removes or reduces it. Pick one of these and do it this week, then the next one after that. That is how a business is able to continuously improve its security. Rome wasn’t built in a day after all.

Awareness was last year. This year it’s action.

October is Cyber Security Action Month, and this year the ask is small: one simple action at a time.

It is likely you have heard of at least one, if not a handful, of cyber incidents over the past year or so. The trend is clear: across 2024-25 the Australian Signals Directorate recorded a cybercrime report in Australia roughly every six minutes, and in 2025 the number of breaches reported to the OAIC hit a record 1,205, the highest since the scheme began in 2018.

Here are some examples on home soil where things went wrong:
Mathspace (September 2026): data on more than a million students and staff stolen after a known software flaw sat unpatched for weeks.
AustralianSuper and other major super funds (April 2025): members’ retirement savings drained after attackers logged in with passwords reused from other breaches.
Sydney fintech youX (February 2026): the details of 444,000 Australians, including driver’s licences, left in an unsecured database that sat open for about 10 months.
Deloitte Australia (October 2025): a $440,000 report for a federal department had to be corrected and partially refunded after AI filled it with fabricated references and a made-up court quote.

Different sectors, same story: a basic step not taken in time. Each has a simple answer, and those are exactly what we’re sharing this month. None of this means distrusting everything. It means pausing on the things that matter, the unexpected request, the urgent transfer, the too-good email, long enough to be sure.

Pick one action, do it today, then the next tomorrow. One action a day. A safer October.
