Microsoft is phasing out SMS 2FA Codes as a method of authentication, as well as account recovery, for all personal Microsoft accounts

What can I use instead of SMS to authenticate and verify sign-in?

On Monday 27 July 2026, a test Critical Alert will be sent to all compatible mobile devices in Australia.

The alert will override 'silent' and 'do not disturb' device settings. It will appear like a system notification on screens and make a loud siren sound for 10 seconds.

Criminals design these communications to look real, using official logos, branding, and language to deceive people. The scammers may then use your stolen personal information, including your myGov sign in details, to commit fraud in your name.
