Not something we've tackled before but turns out something we can do. Custom Speaker Grills!

We produced a pair of these this week to suit the Parts Express sealed subwoofer kit for the Dayton Audio Ultimax II 18" subwoofer.

Included was a custom engraved plaque produced 100% in house with the customers preferred subwoofer name.

Because I know people will ask, these came to $275.00 each (shipped) which includes a fully custom design to your preferred dimensions, acoustically transparent speaker cloth, 'clip in' inserts and a custom engraved plaque.

We're happy to help with most things DIY audio related, so don't hesitate to get in touch with any ideas or projects.

What a massive year it’s been here at NB Audio. While we didn’t achieve everything we originally set out to do, we more than made up for it by completing a whole stack of unexpected “side quests” that ultimately made it a very successful and rewarding year.

Three of our main goals for the year were:

▪️Release our range of plate amplifiers and build stock for immediate shipping
▪️Release our range of chassis amplifiers
▪️Release our version of the SB Acoustics “GEMA” kit

While we did soft-launch our plate amplifiers and take a solid number of orders, a constant stream of custom work meant we never gave them the official launch they deserved. As a result, we’ve been operating largely on a lead-time basis rather than holding stock.

A few setbacks with outsourcing the manufacture of the amplifier chassis also meant we didn’t have the confidence to produce them reliably and consistently enough to launch properly. The upside is that we’ve since invested in equipment to manufacture these chassis in-house, giving us far greater control over the entire process.

We also made strong progress on our version of the SB Acoustics “GEMA” kit, which has already attracted a heap of interest. We’re very close on this one and are aiming for an official release in early 2026.

The side quests we did complete:

▪️We released our own range of capacitors, with inductors and resistors coming soon
▪️The volume of custom work far exceeded expectations
▪️Our “custom” plate amplifiers proved far more popular than anticipated
▪️A shift into the commercial space, including professional audio for venues, found us organically and opened the door to some huge opportunities
▪️The decision to launch a YouTube channel focused on speaker building advice, project showcases, and general DIY audio content
▪️Building a massive speaker that was donated to our local football club
▪️A noticeable increase in putting keyboard warriors in their place on Facebook, which provided no shortage of entertainment
▪️Largely maintaining our sanity despite consistent 60–70+ hour weeks juggling NB Audio and our other businesses

So, what’s exciting about 2026?

NB Audio is going full time!

If you’ve followed us for a while, you’ll know NB Audio isn’t a huge, multi-faceted operation. It’s largely been a one man show, typically getting only 15–20 hours a week of attention. From 1 January 2026, however, the main brother behind NB Audio, Jeshua Miller, will be going full time.

I won’t sugar-coat it, the past three to four months have been tough. Balancing NB Audio with our construction business, coaching and playing football, contributing time to the community, and still trying to make room for family, friends, hobbies, and downtime has been just about impossible and simply not sustainable.

I’m incredibly proud to have grown the DIY audio side of the business to the point where it can support full-time focus within just 18 months of launching. From 2026, it’ll finally get the attention it deserves!

Micah, the other brother behind NB Audio, has gradually stepped back to focus on our other business and will play only a very small role from 2026 onward.

Expanded capabilities:

One of our biggest bottlenecks has without question been our CNC. While it’s a capable little machine that’s served us extremely well, it’s simply too small and inefficient for the level of production we’ve reached.

We’re excited to share that we’ve recently acquired a full-sheet CNC, which is currently being commissioned and is expected to be ready for 2026. It’s a huge step up from our previous machine. Not only does it offer a much larger cutting footprint, but the increased rigidity allows us to push it significantly harder, reducing machining time by up to four times.

The larger bed also means more efficient nesting and fewer sheet changes, which, combined with faster machining, will allow us to actually reduce cutting rates from 2026, making our Australian Made products and custom work even more affordable.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a lot more planned, plenty of new products in the pipeline, and more time to focus on doing them properly.

Lead times from 2026:

While we expect lead times to come down dramatically from where they are now, we have some optimising to do before we get there! Because of this, we don't plan on taking on any custom work until at least March 2026.

We plan on spending the first few months of 2026 setting up the workshop so we can produce our work as efficiently as possible. Between a general tidy up, rearranging the layout to optimise space, installing new equipment and streamlining some processes, we have plenty of work to do which we would prefer to get out the way before we get stuck back into custom work.

During this time, we are happy to provide indicative quotes for custom projects but work won't commence until after March 2026 and time frames won't be committed to until we are confident when we will be back up and running!

A massive thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way. When we started NB Speaker Cables back in 2018, working full time in audio was a personal dream of mine. Every one of you has played a part in making that a reality.

Cheers!

We’ve been a little quiet on social media lately, but for good reason. We’ve been flat out keeping up with cable orders, pushing forward a growing list of new releases (and finishing old ones!), and knocking over our usual custom work.

I had to hit pause for a moment though because we had to share this custom plate amp we put together for our new mate Myles, who recently launched a PA speaker building venture called Public Address Systems.

Hypex’s new DSP module has opened up a whole new world of flexibility when paired with their NC###MP amp modules. We’re no longer limited to one NC###MP plus the HF extension module. We can now mix and match any two NC###MP modules, which means higher power per channel, more complex systems and even full 4-way active crossovers.

For this particular build we able to achieve:
- 1200w into 8Ω for the LF channel
- 150w into 8Ω for the mid channel
- 150w into 8Ω for the HF channel
- DSP with fifteen bi-quad filters per channel
- Variable active cooling via the Hypex DIGin piggyback module
- Optional FIR filters

Fully designed, manufactured, assembled and tested in Australia using Hypex DSP and amplifier modules.

And honestly, this only scratches the surface of what will be possible with the new DSP platform.

Make sure to check out Public Address Systems on Instagram (link in comments). Myles is a new kid on the block, a bit like us, but his speaker builds are unreal. We’re looking forward to being part of many more of his systems in the future!

We’re putting the final touches on our SB Acoustics Gema kit and felt these speakers deserved something a little more polished than some basic binding posts.

These will be offered as standard in our Gema kits, with the option for custom engraving!

ETA of the kits is still largely in the air as I work through a mountain of projects but I promise it’s coming along and they’ll be available sometime between “very soon” and “hopefully before I die”.

In the meantime, you can find a link to purchase the drivers and pre-assembled crossover in the link in the comments.

We're down to our last 3x SVS Plate amps and have knocked another $50 off to move them on.

It's very unlikely we will be able to get our hands on more of these so once these unicorns are gone, they're gone!

Description: The Sledge STA-300D is a high-performance Class D plate amplifier designed for powering SVS subwoofers. This particular version was designed to be used as a replacement in an older generation SVS SB1000 subwoofer. Ideal as a replacement for compatible SVS subwoofers or custom subwoofer....

Twice the size ≠ Twice the size... Here's a 24" subwoofer driver next to a 12".

I was trying to come up with a first video for our YouTube Channel and I thought...

"What could be more entertaining than buying a 24" subwoofer off Alibaba and seeing if it slaps?"

So here we are... Video coming soon (by soon, I mean later because I haven't even started filming it yet).

Things I should be doing:
Finishing the countless projects that are sitting at 95% complete and just need those final touches before launch.

What I’m doing instead:
Designing a new plate amp.

It’s no secret we’re big fans of all things Hypex, but we’ve always felt there was a little gap in their line up - something smaller and lower powered for bookshelf speakers. The closest option is the FA122 FusionAmp, but at 125w per channel and over a foot long, it’s overkill (and oversized!) for most compact builds.

One does not simply accept a gap in the product line… so without further ado...

Introducing the NB Audio NPA-M52! Okay, it’s not officially launching just yet, but a couple of these are going into a custom build we’re working on right now and we’re pretty wrapped with how they've come up.

At just 165x165mm and with a more than adequate 50w per channel into 4 ohms (and 25w into 8 ohms), this little 2 channel plate amp is the perfect solution for your high end bookshelf builds!

Those power figures are rated at just 0.1% THD, but most bookshelf speakers spend their lives cruising around 85-90 dB, right in the 5-10W sweet spot. And that’s exactly where this amp shines, with distortion as low as 0.001% THD.

Designed as a fully active solution with its built-in two-channel DSP, the channels can also be bridged for a total output of 125w into 4Ω (or 100w into 8Ω), perfect for larger builds using passive crossovers.

I could go on and on about how well these perform but instead, I'll drop the notable specs and features in dot point form below:

◆ Manufactured, assembled and tested in house, right here in Australia.
◆ 50w into 4 ohms (25w into 8 ohms) at 0.1% THD
◆ THD as low as 0.001% in the 5-10w sweet spot
◆ SNR of 109db+
◆ Comprehensive DSP including 15 Bi-Quad filters per channel and IIR/FIR Filters.
◆ Linear frequency response (less than 0.3db roll off from 20hz-20khz)
◆ 5 year warranty

These will be priced at $899.95 each. Yessss, I know, they’re not the cheapest option out there. But they’re not meant to be. These are a no-compromise choice for those wanting to squeeze every last drop of performance out of their build. Think PURIFI Audio, Scan-Speak Ellipticor/Revelator, and SB Acoustics Satori territory.

Pricing also includes a 3D-printed backing box, designed to drop straight in before installing the plate amp. It fully seals the amp to prevent air leaks, meaning there’s no need to build a separate sealed chamber inside your enclosure.

We'll have a product page up shortly where you can register your interest to pre-order at a discounted price.

It’s been a while since our last build update and this one is shaping up to be a ripper. Here’s a first look at a pair of floorstanders already well on their way (the top coat goes on tomorrow!), featuring Hypex Electronics plate amps teamed with Purifi Audio’s ultra-low distortion woofers and SB Acoustics tweeters. They’re part of a full 5.2 channel setup that’s on track to be one of our most epic builds yet. Just wait until you see the subs which house drivers powered by our very own NPA1200-8 plate amp 😮‍💨.

It's time for a clean out!

We’ve just dumped a whole heap of cables onto our Seconds & Clearance page. Most of these are near new being either ex-demo stock, test samples, or cables that never made it out the door because someone changed their mind. There's even a pair of our now discontinued 8 AWG 'Kingpin' cable.

The majority are discounted 50%+ off their original price and all include Free Standard Postage.

Every now and then we stuff up a cable... After all, we're only human! We also experiment with different designs, many of which fail or just don't quite turn out how we had it in our head. This section lists items that are either seconds, demo models or simply clearance items. Capacitors – proof that the snake oil doesn’t stop at the speaker terminals.

Like speaker cables, capacitors are often wrapped up in buzzwords, exotic names, and inflated price tags. In reality, their job is simple: block certain frequencies, pass others. What actually matters is using the right material and keeping tolerances tight so the values are accurate and the resulting response, predictable and consistent.

Introducing NB Audio's own range of capacitors! Ours are polypropylene, the standard choice for crossovers because they’re stable and consistent. We’ll be offering them in both 2% and 5% tolerances, giving the option of tighter matching where consistency is critical, along with an electrolytic range for larger values where film caps become impractical and overly expensive.

Our poly caps will be offered in values ranging from 0.1µF to 100µF with our electrolytic caps ranging from 4.7µF, right up to 330µF.

Full details and specifications coming soon...

25/08/2025

While I don't think I will ever find a hobby (and now business!) I am more passionate about than audio, Australian Rules Football (AFL), specifically grass roots footy, is certainly a close second.

I grew up playing footy right right through to my late teens, but stepped away from it when I left school and started working. Looking back, walking away will always be one of my biggest regrets, but coming back to the game has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Returning to local sport these past few years, not just as a player, but as a coach, has really opened my eyes to how much more a footy club is than just the game. For a lot of young blokes, it's a bit of a lifeline, a place to belong, to let off steam, and to be surrounded by mates. That sense of community makes a huge difference for their mental health, specifically for young men who are more vulnerable than ever.

The game and the Tanunda Football Club est.1908 gave me plenty when I was younger, and even more now that I am older. I wanted to find a way to give back, and felt what better way than to combine it with my passion for audio. So, I decided to build and donate this speaker, giving the boys a way to warm up and celebrate their wins with a little extra 'doof'.

What began as a fairly modest design quickly grew into something a bit over the top, but I’m confident it’s a speaker that current and future generations of players will enjoy for many years to come. With plenty of personal touches and 'easter eggs', it’s easily my proudest build to date, and one where I trialled new techniques I’m sure will carry through to future projects. A little shoutout to my wife who kept the house running as I spent a few late nights getting this ready in time for the last home game and even took a few hours out of her day on the Friday before the game to touch up the logo. Not bad considering she happens to play Netball for the rival club!

For those less interested in my footy monologue and more interested in the speaker itself, here's a few features/specs:

◆ Dual 18" SB Audience BIANCO-18SW450 Subwoofer drivers.
◆ Dual 10" SB Audience BIANCO-10MW200 mid-woofers
◆ SB Audience BIANCO-44CD-K Compression Driver with H250 Horn
◆ 1000w Hypex bridged dual channel amplifier module for the subwoofer channel
◆ 2x 125w Hypex dual channel amplifier module for the mid-woofer and tweeter
◆ Full DSP control using Hypex's recently released DSP3-224 module
◆ Bluetooth connectivity
◆ 350L vented enclosure for the subwoofers
◆ Sealed enclosure for the mids and tweeter
◆ Custom CNC cut 2mm aluminium grills to protect the drivers (it is going in a football club changeroom after all!)
◆ Black Duratex coating

With the goal of finishing it prior to the last home game, EQ/tuning has yet to be optimised, but the combination of ultra low distortion amplifier modules from Hypex Electronics and quality drivers from SB Acoustics (Audience) resulted in impressive performance!

With this passion project wrapped up, it’s back to focusing on our customers. Lead times for custom builds are still sitting at 2–3+ months, but if you're interested in getting something built or just after some DIY audio parts, be sure to get in touch!

One last takeaway, if you’re part of a local sporting club, make sure you thank the people who give up so much of their own time to keep the doors open and the balls fizzing. Better yet, put your hand up and volunteer a little extra of your own time to help share the load.
