A logo has a distinctive outline. Then it is placed inside a standard rectangle, leaving a visible border that was never part of the original design. For some applications, a standard square, oval or rectangle is exactly the right solution. For others, a contour-cut label can follow the approved artwork or the shape of the available product area.

A production run may contain hundreds of identical machines, enclosures or pieces of equipment. The branding is the same. The model information is the same. The nameplates are the same size and finish. But each unit still needs its own identity.

A FLAT OVERLAY CAN STILL GIVE THE OPERATOR TACTILE GUIDANCE

An operator reaches for a control while watching the machine-not the panel. A completely flat printed surface may show where the button is, but it provides little physical guidance to the hand.

Graphic panels can include embossed button areas. This gives selected controls a raised profile and helps the visual interface become tactile as well.

That can be useful when:
• Controls are used repeatedly
• Operators wear gloves
• Several buttons sit close together
• The interface needs a clearer physical hierarchy
• The product must remain compact and easy to clean

BACKLIGHTING NEEDS MORE THAN A HOLE IN THE ARTWORK

Two control panels can contain the same symbols and colours but behave very differently once the LEDs behind them are switched on.

A completely clear area may create a visible hotspot. An area that is too opaque may make the indicator difficult to see. LNI graphic panels can use diffused transparent printing where LED backlighting is required. The printed layer helps control how the light is presented through the panel.

A control unit needs branding, operating information and a digital readout. A solid label could carry the print, but it would cover the LED display.

One solution is a graphic panel designed with a clear window for the readout. This allows a single component to:

THE INK RUBBED OFF, BUT THE INSPECTION RECORD REMAINED

A technician records the next inspection date on a label. The equipment is then handled, cleaned and used for months. Eventually, the surface ink begins to fade or rub away.

If the record exists only in the ink, important information may be lost.

Some write-on label materials can be permanently indented when written on with a pen. Even if the ink is later removed, the indentation can remain readable.

A VEHICLE GRAPHIC CAN BE VISUALLY CORRECT IN A RENDER AND TECHNICALLY WRONG ON THE VEHICLE.

A panel curve may distort part of the design. A seam may interrupt an important element. The proposed material may behave differently across a bonnet, roof and vertical side panel.

For vehicle manufacturers and product-brand teams, approving the digital concept is therefore only one part of the process. The graphic also needs to fit the physical vehicle, perform in its environment and be repeatable across every unit in the range.
