WHY SURFACE TESTING MATTERS

An adhesive that works perfectly on one surface may fail completely on another.
Even when two surfaces look similar, they may behave very differently.
Consider powder-coated metal.
Its texture, coating chemistry and surface energy can vary between suppliers, colours, finishes and production batches.
The same applies to plastics, painted components and composite materials.
That is why adhesive selection should not be based only on a general description such as “metal” or “plastic”.

Useful testing considers:
• The actual production surface
• Cleaning and preparation methods
• Application temperature
• Pressure and dwell time
• Heat, moisture and chemical exposure
• How the product will be handled in the field

Testing the real combination of label, adhesive, surface and environment can prevent expensive failures later.
The smallest component can become a major problem when hundreds, or thousands, of units are already in production.

THE VALUE OF 3D BADGING

Why do some products immediately appear more premium than others?
Sometimes, it comes down to depth.
Flat graphics communicate information.

A well-designed 3D badge can create a stronger physical and visual presence through:
• Dimension
• Highlights and reflections
• Texture
• Defined edges
• Contrast with the product surface

This is particularly valuable on vehicles, machinery, equipment, appliances and other products where buyers judge quality before they ever use the product.

A badge does more than display a logo.
It becomes a permanent brand touchpoint, one that can reinforce quality every time the product is seen.

When your product has been carefully designed and manufactured, its branding should reflect the same level of care.

WHAT MAKES A METAL NAMEPLATE LAST?

Metal nameplates are often chosen for demanding industrial applications, but not all metal nameplates are the same. Their performance depends on several decisions.

🔹 The metal:
Aluminium and other materials offer different levels of strength, weight and corrosion resistance.

🔹 The production process:
Information may be printed, anodised, etched or embossed depending on the application.

🔹 The environment:
Heat, UV exposure, abrasion, chemicals and moisture must all be considered.

🔹 The attachment method:
A nameplate may use an adhesive, mechanical fixing holes or a combination of both.

🔹 The information it carries:
Branding, operating instructions, serial information and safety messages may each require different levels of durability.

The right nameplate is not simply the one that looks best on day one.
It is the one that remains legible, secure and fit for purpose throughout the life of the product.

WHY LABELS FAIL

When a label fails, the adhesive is often blamed first.
But the real cause may be somewhere else.

Common causes include:
• Applying the label to a contaminated surface
• Using the wrong adhesive for the substrate
• Applying it at the wrong temperature
• Insufficient pressure during installation
• Choosing a material that cannot handle the environment
• Testing a clean sample rather than the real production surface

Powder coating, textured plastics, oils, dust, heat, chemicals and outdoor exposure can all affect performance.

A label can meet its written specification and still fail in real operating conditions. The best solution is to consider the surface, environment and application process together, not as separate decisions.

A label is only successful when it stays where it is supposed to stay.

🔵 PRODUCT BRANDING IS PART OF THE PRODUCT 🔵

A badge, label or nameplate may be one of the smallest components on a product. But it can have an enormous influence on how that product is perceived.

It communicates:
• Who made it
• Whether it feels premium
• How it should be used
• Important safety information
• Whether the manufacturer pays attention to detail

That is why product branding should not be treated as a decorative addition at the end of production.

The material, finish, adhesive and application method should be considered as part of the product itself.

When the branding looks right, performs correctly and lasts as long as the product, the whole product feels better engineered. At LNI, we call this Branding Engineering.

You have good vehicles sitting in dealer yards. They're well built, reliable and they have all the features buyers want.

The units were already installed in the field, commissioned and signed off.
The spec had been followed. The label supplier had delivered exactly what was asked for. Adhesive rated correctly. Materials compliant.

On paper, everything was right. Three weeks later, the first report came in. A label had lifted – then another.
