Unlock the Power of a Plant-Based Diet: Boost Energy, Shed Weight, and Transform Your Health!

In no time, your body kicks into high gear, fueled by the powerhouse of nutrients from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.

By Dr. Chitalu Chilufya.

Lusaka, Sept. 29 - Switching to a plant-based diet is nothing short of transformative. Almost immediately, the body responds with a surge of vitality, fueled by the nutrient-packed bounty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.

It’s like firing on all cylinders, with increased energy levels as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants flood the system. The high fiber content, a natural gift of plant-based eating, kick-starts better digestion, sweeping away discomforts like bloating and constipation. But the benefits don’t stop at digestion.

That fiber boost also helps chip away at cholesterol, a steady ally in improving heart health by lowering blood pressure and reducing inflammation. As the days pass, many begin to notice weight slipping away - especially those who once indulged in processed foods or animal products. Plant-based meals, lower in calories and saturated fats, carve a path toward a leaner, healthier body.

There’s also a psychological lightness, as plant-based foods deliver satiety without the sluggishness that often follows heavier meals. Nutrient-dense, they leave you feeling fuller for longer, but not weighed down.

Yet, this lifestyle shift is not without its pitfalls. A poorly balanced plant-based diet can lead to critical nutrient gaps - missing out on essentials like vitamin B12, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids, nutrients predominantly found in animal products. These aren’t luxuries; they’re the building blocks for energy, strong bones, and sharp minds. Fortified foods or supplements can bridge the gap, but they must not be overlooked.

And then, of course, there’s the question of protein. For the uninitiated, it might seem like a challenge to meet daily requirements without animal sources. Yet, with a little knowledge and thoughtful planning, the richness of beans, lentils, tofu, and nuts can easily rise to the occasion, providing more than enough to fuel a thriving body.

Exposing the True Benefits of Domain Names!

No matter your business, big or small, online or offline, it’s safe to say that there are clear benefits to having a domain name. In fact, they are still sold in their thousands on a daily basis, worldwide.

There are so many websites in the world already, so, does having a custom domain name still make a difference?

The short answer is YES: domain names are important. On a basic level, domain names affect how easily your potential customers can find you on search engines, and what a visitor’s first impression of your service will be.

You may, then, wish to know the tangible benefits of having a domain name. Well, domain names can benefit your business by helping you to:

◾Reach your target market
◾Maintain brand ownership
◾Get found easily by customers
◾Build an online presence
◾Set expectations
◾Develop credibility
◾Boost your SEO
◾Compete with other businesses
◾Grow and expand

At WUMI Corp. having built over several websites for small business owners, we’d like to think that we’ve learned a great deal about how websites work. As such, we can advise on some of the most common questions we’ve heard about domains over the years, as well as explain what separates the great domains from the less-than-stellar.

BREAKING NEWS: Huawei loses access to Android license, Effective Immediately!

In a surprise move, Google has halted its business operations with Huawei, one of the leading mobile phone manufacturers in the world, effective immediately but current devices are safe, a report by Reuters notes.

According to Reuters, "Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system, and the next version of its smartphones outside of China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the Google Play Store and Gmail app."

Last Thursday, the Trump administration had added Huawei to their trade blacklist and owing to that it will be extremely difficult for Huawei to do business with US companies. Google is one of the US companies with the highest number of consumers in the world using its open-source operating system Android.

The move will put the users of Huawei smartphones in limbo, they won’t be able to get any new Android updates, security patches and even will lose access to Google Play Store which makes a huge portion of Android phone experience. Huawei, in just the recent quarter of 2019, shipped more than 59 million smartphones which makes a huge chunk of devices powered by Android Operating System.

A source closer to the matter mentions that Google was forced to end ties with Huawei as a result of trade blacklisting of Huawei in US. Otherwise, Huawei was expected to become the biggest seller of Android-powered devices in the world beating Samsung and other Chinese smartphone manufacturers by a good margin.

Education Reforms Must Prioritise Teaching How To Think.

Education is a critical investment for human and economic development. But the education we need is not the current system because the formalised, structured education system can no longer serve our needs. Rapidly social changes are creating uncertainties and complexities that require critical and analytical minds. But what is even worse is that the current education system was not designed to prepare us to develop analytical and critical thinking skills and attitudes.

The colonial education system, on which the current education system in Zambia is based, had an in-built bias that meant it suppressed local knowledge and helped create a mindset of blind loyalty rather than open minds to new ways of thinking. Something was not true, was not real knowledge until it came off English lips. And since what came off the colonial mouth was meant to justify colonialism, through education, Africans were systematically fed an inferiority complex. It was a tool of control, not one of empowerment.

This is why, to date, university graduates can't offer society any solutions but would rather look for white collar jobs. I call it training not education, it was not liberation of the mind but an enslavement of it because its purpose was not to educate a person to understand the objective limits to development, but to train a person altogether to accept and even administer limits to development and in the most efficient manner.

Let's re-design our curricula, textbooks and teaching methodologies. It is, perhaps, easier to educate a child from the beginning than re-educate him when he has already formed. Integration of critical thinking skills at primary and secondary levels is extremely vital. Emphasis must be systematically be shifted from just acquiring knowledge to the acquisitions of the capacity to think and analyse facts logically and make conclusions on one's own. Early education should, equally, present pupils with local myths, values and legendry personalities so as to promote identity and unlearn inferiority complex.

After these education reforms, schools would not only be for “learning” but for “thinking”, producing men and women who can think, who can make new scientific discoveries, who can find more adequate solutions to impelling national problems, who cannot be brainwashed into believing social media propaganda, men and women who can adapt to change.

The importance of education in attaining economic development can never be over-emphasised. As things stand, even social media platforms tend to be a hurdle to development because we don't have the ability to tell what is true or not using our own rational thought processes. Can voting be issue based when electorates do not have the ability to make informed decisions at a personal level?

Government Must Repeal Colonial-era Legislation!

A 19 year old young man of Lusaka will spend the next year in jail for stealing four pairs of trousers while another man risks going in for stealing three pairs of underwear in Shoprite stores. To those who may not be aware, white collar crimes in Zambia, until recently, have carried lighter sentences because the jobs were for our colonial masters while such crimes as stealing goats, chickens and household goods were punished heavily to instill fear and deter domestic workers from ever committing them. Todate, stealing a chicken is more severely punished in our courts of law than stealing K20,000 at work.

In October 2016, a 40 year old peasant farmer Masautso Banda of Chenkwe village in Sinda was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour by the Chipata High Court Judge Petronella Ngulube for stealing a chicken valued at K25. Last month, Lusaka Magistrate court sentenced former Ministry of Health human resource manager Henry Kapoko and four others to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour, for theft by public servant of K6.8m. Where is justice?

This is what we elect our MPs for and this is what CSOs must be looking at. Alas, our discussions are always about whether 2021 should be for Edgar Lungu or Hakainde Hichilema. Politics should not be a self preservation system but a vehicle for development and development must cover human rights as well.
