Why do farmers in rural areas seem to get better and higher yields?

In Tonga, we say: ibuumi buli mu matwi (life is in the ears).

They actively seek knowledge and they listen to advice on Good Agronomy Practices (GAP).

GAP is the difference between high yields and low yields.

I hope you had a great day.

"I tried and I failed!"

These words are rarely spoken out loud by most entrepreneurs because no wants to share their failure nor do most want to hear it because success is always sweeter.

You started selling clothes but the profits just did not come as you thought they would. You rare chickens but people just don't like to pay for things they get on credit, you started a shop but something went wrong...the business just did not succeed.

It's OK! Really it is!

You are a neck about the rest because you tried and you learnt something from your effort.

More than someone who has never tried, you are better equipped to start something else.

Well done for failing, now get up and move on! Your experience has equipped you for success.

Closing the gap

most young people try to avoid spending time with the older generations; our parents and grand parents and prefer our peers. My experience as an entrepreneur has been that we draw much from interacting with the different age groups; wisdom, selfless help and guidance is often given from the older generations than our peer groups. The only thing about the older generations is that they want to see you be a fighter, have the will and be willing to learn and they will freely give. Be an apprentice to the generations of old and see how you will grow. Volunteer your time , be a chola boy here and there while learning all that you can.

Find a successful business woman or man who is a generation or two older and start to spend time with them. Tell us how you go.

So earlier this week i had a chat with a bank manager about the prevailing economic situation and the decisions the bank has had to make especially regarding issuance of loans, their promoting of credit cards over loans and how in Zambia we do not have a saving culture which would help a lot in the financial sector. Anyway as we spoke i could not help but think of the Standbic Bank Music Festival featuring UB40 who's charges are k500 and k1000 or something like that. My thoughts were in two fold(or more);

1. What is the bank's policy on saving money and how do they promote it.

2. How many of those going have savings account?

3. If i spoke to one of their bank representatives would they advise me to buy a ticket or save my 500 or k1000? Especially considering total cost plus drinks, food etc will cost more than the ticket charge.

4. With the Coming of IMF, what does the bank suggest the masses do to prepare for the effects of IMF especially because i have heard the phrase "tightening of belts" being used here and there by people in governance.

As i grow into my investment future my thought when it comes to spending is always: what is the opportunity cost.

'To spend on UB40 and have some fun before IMF or set up a UB40 savings account for IMF times' is the underlying question i guess.

Last week I asked one of our farm helpers to get me some r**e from the garden (it was the first harvest), he gladly did so but on delivery reminded me that he had written it as a purchase in the sales book...i laughed. Today I was reminded that I owe k5.

So I am here thinking hmm! Really?
But at the same time I feel proud that they have learnt the business concept and that indeed I must lead by example and pay for the produce I got for home consumption. What do you think?

If you are ready to write the letter below then you are set to get started.

Dear Motivational Speaker,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the many people you have helped get off their backsides and get started at one thing or the other.

I read books that motivated me to get up and do something; I went to motivational talks and networking events that got me fired up so much so I had to get up and do something and also made me feel “yes I can” and it was because of these motivation books , talks and outings that I actually was fired up enough to get started at something and for that I Thank you. However, as soon as I got started I discovered that I was all fired up but still had no idea how to actually do the work that needed to be done.

I knew how to register a company and had an idea how my business would operate but no one actually spoke of the different accounting services I needed, how to close deals, how to speak when closing deals, when I needed to submit what to the revenue authorities, how to actually keep good records...i was motivated but clueless.

I went to a few more motivational networking events and further realized that none of the speakers where actually divulging information on how to actually succeed nor what exactly I needed to do at my venture. They only told stories that would get me fired up and that was it. I was fired up!

Feeling disappointed I abandoned motivational , networking events and motivational books because after being motivated they just did not take the next step of equipping me with the how to information. I decided it was time to figure it out, it was time to sit with the not so motivational people whom we hardly hear of and ask “what I needed to do to get my work done”. It was these people, these non-motivational speakers who go unnoticed and seat in crowd at motivational events that taught me how to actually get started in a business. It was the books that do not make the window display that actually had the information I needed to do the work. They gave me what I call the “Dummies guide to starting a business”

So today I still appreciate you for me and all the other people that you get fired up but today my motivation comes from within, it comes from having discussions with my 7 year old Master who wakes up on one day and says she would like to be a Doctor and on the next day she says she wants to be a pilot and on other days when she needs a K5 for masuku, I am certain she belongs in the business world because of confidence, persistence and amazing negotiation skills she applies to get that K5. Its’ simply knowing that she must have what she needs to be what she wants to be that I am motivated and fired up to get the job done.

Dear motivational speak, Thank you for firing me up to get started, for helping me realize you were not enough and more so for teaching me that my motivation is best fired from within.
