It’s the basic chores you do at home that compound into greater service.
Every day may feel like a normal day, but every lesson learned shapes you into the person you aspire to become.
When I was cleaning our house and later proceeded to wash the dishes, a thought dropped into my mind: Do these really contribute to what I want to become in life?
I am very ambitious. At times, whenever I am doing anything, I think beyond the present and see myself in a different realm. But the reality at that moment was simple: I was sweeping the house.
I am at a point where I do house chores not because I am told to, but because I see them as a responsibility and a way to be of help and useful.
You see, it’s that simple reasoning of “Let me clean my room” or “Let me wash the dishes” that builds certain skills—such as your ability to adapt, work without supervision, take responsibility, and do the right thing even when nobody is watching.
I have realized that I may not be in the industry yet, but my home is my industry. I will steward it, and I will not wait for Mum to remind me that I need to do something. I will do everything with joy in my heart.
At the beginning of this month, I committed myself to learning about 10 Engineering companies in Zambia. So far, I have come to understand that these big companies don't just look at your academic qualifications. They also look at the value you can bring to the company, your integrity, your ability to work with or without supervision, and how adaptable you are.
In as much as we are eager to learn more and prepare for our future careers, let’s not forget about the little things we do at home. These little things shape us into who we want to become.
Everything starts from home.
This is my lesson today: Every basic thing you do at home builds you for your future profession.
THE FUTURE IS ENGINEERING. I AM HERE TO BUILD, NOT TO DESTROY.
