Ambassador Kazonga Calls For Urgent Repairs To Mwase Bridge Ahead Of 2026/2027 Rains.

Ambassador Evans Kazonga Ng'oma of the BuyZed Campaign has called on government agencies to urgently repair the Mwase Bridge and other damaged crossing points in Lundazi District before the anticipated heavy rains begin.

Speaking in a video message, Amb. Kazonga cited the Zambia Meteorological Department’s rainfall forecast for October to December 2026, which indicates that Eastern, Muchinga, Northern and Luapula provinces will receive above normal rainfall, while the southern part of the country is expected to experience little rainfall.

He warned that failure to act now could leave communities in Mwase and surrounding areas cut off from Lundazi town.

"Last season we saw bridges and crossing points washed away, including the big bridge here in Lundazi, Mercy. As we speak today, there has been no tangible work done on those crossing points and the road from Mathe going into Lundazi through Dunda," Amb. Kazonga said.

The Ambassador appealed to the Road Development Agency (RDA), the Local Council, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), the Zambia National Service (ZNS), and other enforcement wings to move in before November to undertake repairs.

He noted that funds under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) can be utilized for the works, and urged that the matter should not be politicized.

"Let us do the correct things. We don’t want people to suffer again like last season," he added.

Video footage accompanying the statement showed flooded rivers, submerged bridges, and houses surrounded by water from last season’s rains in Lundazi, highlighting the risk to infrastructure and homes.

Amb. Kazonga also referenced the role of Lt. Gen. Maliti Solochi and DMMU in disaster response, stressing the need for proactive measures rather than waiting for disaster to strike.
