Be Aware of What Information You’re Sharing on Social Media

Social media may be a great way to share information with family and friends, but are you also sharing information with attackers?
Scammers and attackers can use the information you post on social media to gain Personally Identifiable Information (PII) about you that can be used against you. Review your privacy settings on a recurring basis, delete old and unused accounts, and review your photos and videos foreground and background before posting to ensure you’re not sharing anything that could reveal key pieces of personally identifiable information.
Before you go to post on social media, ask yourself – could this information you are about to post be used against you?

*What is personally identifiable information (PII)?*
Personally identifiable information (PII) is any data that could potentially identify a specific individual.

SECURE YOURSELF ONLINE
If a website offers two-factor authentication, use it. It’s not bulletproof, but it’s better than nothing. Use strong, unique passwords on the websites you frequent, and store them more securely with a dependable password manager.

Do not share sensitive or personal information online.

Criminals are using technology and complex algorithms to decode passwords. It’s important to update your passwords regularly, but you should also be cautious when providing personal details to the public. Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is data that can trace an individual’s identity. Many of us use a combination of PII to create memorable passwords, so it is important to keep details as discrete as possible.

Personally Identification Information Types include:

Your names, personal ID numbers (driver’s license, social security number, passport number, patient ID number, credit card accounts), addresses, biometrics, vehicle numbers, phone numbers and technology asset information (IP addresses)

Be Extra Cautious With Email

Distraction is the cyber criminal’s best friend. It’s best you use work PCs only for work— no online shopping or personal email allowed. This applies to remote work as well. If employees toggle back and forth between work and gift buying, the risk of clicking on a malicious link increases. If a great shopping deal suddenly appears on their browser, they might click before thinking twice.

Treat business information as personal information:
Business information typically includes a mix of personal and proprietary data.

While you may think of trade secrets and company credit accounts, it also includes employee personally identifiable information (PII) through payroll etc.

Be exceptionally careful about what you are sharing, and be cautious of how you are sharing it.

Phishing Scams
Phishing is one of the most common ways that hackers obtain another user’s credentials to steal their identities. Most antivirus programs contain protection against phishing, but if you’re not sure, it’s best not to click on any unfamiliar emails, texts, messages, attachments, or links. These links could bring you to fraudulent websites for social engineering. That’s how hackers get your login credentials directly from the source (you).

Mute someone on Twitter if you don’t want to see their posts, but you do want them to see yours
Many people are probably familiar with the Block function on Twitter and other social media services, which will prevent another user from seeing or commenting on anything you post. But what if you just don’t want to see the other person’s posts and don’t mind them seeing or commenting on yours? This is what the Mute function is for, which will hide everything the other user posts, including comments, though they’ll still be able to see anything you write. You’ll find it right next to the Block feature.

MFA for Email and VPN
Passwords are no longer enough! Supplement your traditional password with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to ensure secure access across networks. Identity theft takes on many forms and you need to insist that your users have another form of confirming their identification when accessing your corporate network.
