OmniComs Africa was proud to have been involved in this incident as the communication and tracking service provider, supporting the rapid and effective response that led to the successful rescue of the learner.

While the initial identification of the snake differed from what was later confirmed to be a Many-Horned Adder, this highlights how difficult accurate identification can be in the moment unless one has specialist knowledge. What truly mattered was the speed, clarity and coordination of the response that followed.

As the preferred service provider to Bishops Diocesan College, OmniComs Africa supplied both the Garmin inReach Messenger devices and the dedicated Hytera Digital Radio Repeater Network used throughout the outing. These systems proved vital in enabling reliable communication, accurate tracking and efficient incident management.

Key factors that contributed to the rapid rescue response included:

Early call for assistance via the Hytera VHF Repeater Network, with each group carrying two handheld radios.

Precise live tracking through Garmin inReach Messengers, monitored by OmniComs Africa and the WildMedix medical team.

Quick, decisive activation of WSAR and the Red Cross AMS helicopter.

Continuous, uninterrupted radio communication providing on-scene guidance and pre-arrival medical instructions.

Excellent teamwork across all responding teams and support personnel.

We commend the learners, staff, medical teams, WSAR, AMS and all those involved for their professionalism and swift action. Incidents like this reinforce the importance of preparation, reliable technology and strong communication protocols.
