Masakhane Barcoding and Labels

Masakhane Barcoding and Labels We are a label manufacturing business but also supply printed stationery like letterheads etc.

Masakhane Barcoding & Labels is a proudly South African, BEE status level 4, flexographic printing and manufacturing company specialising in the supply of Self Adhesive labels, barcode printers and general printing supplies. Our products are widely used in the mining, agricultural, transport, utilities and manufacturing sectors. The company was founded in September 1993 as "Janet Cziganek CC" a broker for continuous printing for the computer industry. As a result of the economic developments of the rainbow nation (Post 1994), the company experienced good growth in both customers and turnover. The investment in manufacturing machinery and staff prompted a name change from Janet Cziganek cc to Masakhane Businesses forms, a name chosen to represent the unified spirit of a young democracy. In 1997 capital expansion enabled the acquisition of a second printing machine resulting in a broader product offering and a final name change to Masakhane Barcoding & Labels cc. With over 25 years experience in the printing & label industry and a sound knowledge of associated fields, Masakhane Barcoding & Labels is able to deliver customised label solutions of exceptional quality and at competitive prices. We take pride in our dedicated customer focus and operational flexibility allowing for completion of emergency orders and specified customer needs.

DID YOU KNOW? A RED BARCODE COULD BE INVISIBLE TO A SCANNER!

It might look perfectly readable to you, but your barcode scanner could disagree.

Here's why:

Many traditional barcode scanners use red light to read the bars and spaces.

Red bars can reflect that light in a way that makes them difficult for the scanner to distinguish from the background.

That's why black bars on a white background are generally the safest option for reliable scanning.

The takeaway?

When it comes to barcode printing, choosing colours isn't just about matching your branding. It's about making sure your barcode can actually do its job.

At Masakhane, we know that what looks good in print also needs to work in practice.

Because a barcode that doesn't scan is just a collection of lines.

YOUR DESIGN LOOKS PERFECT. UNTIL IT GETS TRIMMED.

Welcome to Masakhane 101!

Today's file preparation tip is all about BLEED.

Ever wondered why printed materials sometimes end up with an unwanted white edge?

It could be because the artwork wasn't set up with enough bleed.

Here's what you need to know:

🔹 Bleed: Extra background colour or imagery extending beyond the final cutting line.

🔹 Trim line: Where the printed material will be cut to its finished size.

🔹 Safe area: The space inside the trim line where important text, logos and details should stay.

PRO TIP: 3 mm bleed on each side is common for many printed products, but always confirm the requirements with your printer. Different products and finishing processes may require different specifications.

A little preparation before printing can prevent a lot of frustration afterwards!

Great printing starts with great file preparation.

Meet the employee who never takes a lunch break.

Doesn't ask for leave.
Doesn't complain about Mondays.
And can be found working in just about every industry.

We're talking about the humble barcode!

It might not look impressive, but when used with the right systems, barcodes help businesses:

✅ Identify products quickly
✅ Track stock and assets
✅ Reduce manual data-entry errors
✅ Improve inventory accuracy
✅ Speed up everyday processes

Of course, even the hardest-working employee needs to be properly equipped.

That's why barcode quality, correct sizing, contrast and print durability matter.

At Masakhane, we understand that a barcode isn't just something you print. It's something your business relies on.

Small code. Big responsibility.

Masakhane 101 - Why can a colour look different when it's printed?

Your screen and a printing press don't create colour in the same way.

RGB uses Red, Green and Blue light to create colours on digital screens.
CMYK uses Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black inks to reproduce colour in print.

Because RGB uses light, a screen can display some very bright, vibrant colours that CMYK inks can't reproduce in exactly the same way.

That's why artwork can look electric on your monitor but slightly different once it's printed.

The takeaway?

When you're designing something specifically for print, make sure the artwork is properly prepared for the intended printing process and don't rely solely on how a colour appears on your screen.

Good print starts before the printer starts running.

It looks like one label. But it could be doing five jobs at once. 🏷

A good label can help your product:
✓ Get noticed
✓ Communicate important information
✓ Carry barcodes or variable data
✓ Identify products or assets
✓ Stand up to the environment it was designed for

The right label isn't simply about what gets printed on it. Material, adhesive, application and finish all need to suit the job.

From product and retail labels to more specialised applications, Masakhane can help you create labels designed for where and how they'll actually be used.

Because the best label isn't just the one that looks good. It's the one that does its job.

From print to installation-ready.

Another piece of branding brought to life by the Masakhane team.

This Supa Quick signage is a great example of how large-format print turns practical information into something clear, visible and unmistakably on-brand.

Whether it’s promoting a service, directing customers or simply making sure your business gets noticed, good signage has a job to do long after the printer stops running.

Printed to be seen. Made to get to work.
