Overclocking/Undervolting, Is it Safe?

This is an age-old question. First, let us start with what
is overclocking and undervolting.I have seen the computer
evolution. From Dipswitches overclocking to bios overclocking
It is when you run your CPU/GPU/Memory. out of specs. Now in most
cases, it's pretty safe.

When to Overclock or undervolt? First thing know your
hardware. Google is the easiest way to find out
how much your GPU can be tweaked and/or undervolt.
The practice is. Increase your GPU mhz by 5 until
it's not stable.

The best way to test if it's stable is to run Heaven Benchmark.
If the GPU is not stable, Heaven will detect it and give
artifacts. CPU is different as you do this through your Bios.
No hardware is ever the same. Because someone else can run his/her Windows will most Likey give a bluescreen and restart the PC when your CPU/Memory is not stable.
CPU at 4.2ghz from 3.8ghz does not mean you will get the same.
When you overclock, you usually have to increase the voltage
as the stock voltage is usually around 1.2v+. My old Ryzen 5
2600 ran at 4.2ghz at a volt of 1.375. GPUs runs a lot cooler
when undervolted. An example is my RX470 has a blower style
Cooler. It ran 83c. After undervolt it runs at 75c.

Now where this formula does not apply is on an APU
( Accelerated Processing Unit ) They tend to push around 1.5v
According to AMD that is safe as it has a CPU and GPU
on the same package. This is way too high. I undervolted
my brother 2400g to 1.425v and it runs fine.
Memory is made to run higher and in most cases,
you don't need to touch the volt. It is free performance.

Story 2:

I have a couple computers at my house. My pride and you are my dual Xeon server
which is used for my virtual machines and then I have an AMD 4600+ dual core I
got from a friend back in 2009. Now the AMD was faulty as it did not start.
So started working on her and I found out it's a memory problem. I did a post
on memory and that is basically what happened here

She is funny when it comes to memory as only 2 memory that I have worked on her
and in single channel only. I mainly have my server on as she has my important
documents and work files on. A couple weeks ago I thought I would start my AMD.
Powered on but no display. So I tested the memory and she gave no beep errors.
Next, I tested GPU ( she has a gt610 ) again nothing. Tested everything. So
I plugged in the server and she works fine. Change the power cable as my server
has 2 power supplies and boom she worked. The other power cable still works fine
on the Server. One of those ahm moments.

The Weird and wonderful world of Tech and Troubleshooting hardware.
Story 1:
A Computer can be so deliciate. Last week I was busy working on my computer
and my computer gave me a BSOD ( Blue Screen of Death ) After that my
SSD ( solid state drive ) refused to boot. I tried to fix the boot sector which can cause
issues but unlike Windows 7, Windows 11 troubleshooting doesn’t really work.
So I did a scan Disk and it still did not work. So I tried to do a factory reset. Again It didn’t want to load Windows. I even tried to reinstall Windows 11. The first time I had
a problem on an ssd not booting or read in Windows but it works in my bios. Basically, it was Windows that did not like my SSD for some reason. It never gave me a problem
before. I had a lot of issues with Microsoft for the weak AMD support. A lot of Direct X stuff didn’t work. So after about 30 years, I moved over to Linux. Linux loves AMD. Even in Windows OpenGL ran really bad. AMD said they fixed the weak
OpenGL performance with a driver update. Mine ran really slow. On Linux, there is no problem. Not saying anyone should move away from Windows. It’s just for my computer and use, Linux is a lot faster as my current computer is 10 years old.
There are only 2 windows that I ever liked. Windows 98SE and Windows 7 Pro.
Linux is also not user-friendly. People may feel overwhelmed by the terminal. I was born in the ’80s. We did not have windows. We used Dos. Windows has its benefits same as Linux. Windows has more games/app support. Linux also has pretty good apps and Security. It is a lot harder to set up an AMD GPU as I had to install a third-party app to get my AMD Control Panel to work and to overclock or undervolt the GPU.

CPU’s ( Central Processing Unit )

I was fortunate enough to see the evolution off Computer
Hardware and Software. I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s
The Glory days of computing. My first Computer I built Was
In 1987. My Father said you want a computer, built it yourself.
So he gave me a lot of parts and I built a IBM Compact which had
Dual CPU’s 386sx running at 33mhz. It ran at the same speed as
A 486 dx/2 which had a frequency of 66mhz. It had 24mb ram but
back then the hardware wasn't advanced enough so it only detected 16MB

CPU’s or like I prefer to call it processor. Reason for this is. Yes the right term
Is CPU but in general. The whole computer makes up a Central Processing Unit
Without A cpu or memory or motherboard. The computer won’t start.
We got a Client that are coming from far so we can see what she is running with.
She uses coral draw. Now coral draw needs a stronger processor. She wants a
GPU as well ( Graphics Processing Unit ) We told her we need to see what she has
And what Software she use. If she use it for video editing etc then we will install
A Nvidia GPU as it runs with an NVENC encoding. Depends on Software it will either
Use CPU encoding which is slow or GPU encoding which is a lot faster. AMD only
Released GPU’s with encoding a little while ago.

When you pick computer parts. Make sure that the parts work together properly.
I had a Ryzen 5 2600 with a GTX 1070 TI. I had like 2% bottle Neck. I am not running
The AMD for now as I am going to build a new Computer. I had some bad luck as
My I7 Motherboard blew. I am sitting with a 2011 AMD A8-3870K with my I& gpu
Which is a RX 470 Sapphire edition 4GB. I do not play a lot of hard core games.
Now here is an example to always make sure the parts compliment each other.
My CPU runs at 100% but my GPU only Runs between 15-20%. Now I do
Levite it a little by setting the game on Higher settings as then your more GPU-
Bound. Always make sure your parts work correctly. Best way to find out is Google.

Working in the IT field. I get a lot of questions. I specialize in mostly old hardware. I do setup new hardware but I prefer the previous generations as they can sometimes be a challenge.

Now the one question that stick's out more than that others is. Why when I have 2 Ram slots and install identical Ram, the computer doesn't start/post. Ram is the technical word but I prefer to call it memory as like the brain it stores data. Only difference is when you restart your computer it resets the memory. Now how to handle this question ( It's more seen on older hardware and I did pick it up on a few servers but also a little while ago and they mostly fix this problem.

Now lets go back in time. Back in the 80's you use to get a computer 640kb of memory. After that they brought out sims. I can remember my dad when I was 5 years old, he told me if I want a computer I will build it myself. So I built an IBM 386xd compact with 2 386 cpu's ( if i remember correct they ran at 33mhz each. with 24mb memory but the technology wasn't that advanced yet so it only detected 16mb.

Incase this is how it worked back then. You have for example 2 memory slots. You fit one memory the pc doesn't boot. You fit 2 the pc boots. The reason for this is that memory banks are 64-bit and a sim is only 32 bit so to fill the 64-bit you needed to fit 2 memory slots to fill the 64-bit bank. There was some improvements but not massive.

Now I will use my I7-860 as an example. It has a P55 motherboard. The memory slots Read A1, A2 and B1, B2. For dual channel you insert memory in Slot A1 and B1 which reads the total to 128-bit. So it’s 2x64 bit = 128-bit. Now I have 2 ddr 3 memory 1600mhz . But it has chips on both sides which you call dual rank memory. This is more common on older computers. When I take the 2 memory and insert it into the Slot A1 and B1 the pc doesn’t boot and they ask me why.

It's simple but also not simple. When you have a dual rank chip ( this got fixed in newer hardware ) it would read the dual rank as 64-bit on the left side and 64-bit on the right side. Then when you add another memory to the B1 it doesn’t work as now in reality it reads the memory as 192-bit which is not supported. So if you take my I7 and fit the memory in slot A1 and slot A2 the pc’s starts. Remember windows still reads it as 64-bit ( use a program like Aida64 or Hwinfo to detect it ) even though the memory uses 64-bit + 64bit. On the channel.

You get single rank memory as well which work perfect but as it is older hardware it’s hard to come by and if you buy say for instance on facebook market place it is random if you do not meet in person. You want 4 memory modules and order them to be couriered once it arrives you see they shipped you 4 dual rank memory and it does not work. It will either be he won’t change/refund it or it will cost you extra money for shipping it back.

Most motherboards has a QVL list for memory etc doesn’t matter which brand gigabyte/asrock/msi to name a few. Reason is that they archive it as they know not everyone wants or can upgrade ( specially big companies who’s software are old and it does not work on new operating systems ) Look up what cpu + memory will work with your computer. If you are not technical and don’t know how to open your computer the right way. Download Hwinfo as it’s free and it list all your hardware. Some may require bios updates which can be intimidating so If you are scared to do it yourself. Take it into a local computer store and ask them to assist you. They have ups’s/power failure mechanism to prevent power failure ( during a bios update if the power goes out the bios would be corrupt and it may end up costing you a motherboard )

If there is any questions feel free to ask. I tried to explain it as easy as possible.

We are a new Company that provide Security and Computer Services. We know how hard the life outside can be especially for the older generation. When you don't know how something work, there's a chance that a computer/security company will rip you off. Personally I have been to other computer shops where I helped the customer buy the stuff they need rather than buying stuff they don't need. We offer free advice over facebook. Anyone can post ask questions or even post your own tip or guide for someone that may need some help.
