The school placement crisis is an annual challenge that parents in South Africa have come to dread.

Imagine the heartbreak of a child who is ready to learn, only to be told there is no seat for them in a classroom. This is the reality for nearly 5,000 children this week.

At SCSA, we believe that administrative hurdles should never stand in the way of a child’s constitutional right to a basic education. We call on the Department of Basic Education to urgently close these placement gaps, ensuring every child enters school without delay.

As we’re rethinking education for an ever-changing world, we're advocating for a broader breadth of skills in our education system, beyond numeracy and literacy. Skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, Ubuntu, and resilience are crucial for success in the 21st century.

Through our Bridging the Gap project, we're working to ensure these skills are translated into the classroom, with aligned teacher development, holistic assessment, and comprehensive curriculum policy.
