We opened on this coast in 2010. Sixteen years later, the machines have changed more than the questions. Laptops got thinner, drives got faster, plenty now lives in the cloud. The UPS carries the PC through load-shedding, and the internet dies anyway.

Look at the wall the fibre box is on. The ONT, the router and the switch all run off mains, with nothing behind them. They draw very little, so a small UPS there runs them far longer than a big one runs a PC.

CCTV has the same gap. Cameras and the recorder sit on mains, so the system stops recording at exactly the hour you'd want footage. Backup for that is on-site work, Umtentweni through to Port Edward, plus Hibberdene, Umzumbe and Pumula.

Clicking or ticking from inside the case. Files that vanish. Documents that will not open. Freezing on something simple, like opening a photo.

A hard drive usually warns you before it goes. If you see any of that, stop using the machine and copy what matters off it now, to an external drive. Every extra hour of use risks the drive dying completely with your files still locked inside it.

Worth knowing: getting a computer working again and getting the files off a dying drive are two different jobs. The second gets harder the longer the drive keeps spinning, and at some point stops being possible.

A MacBook that only charges when the cable sits at a certain angle has a worn port, not a bad cable. An HDMI socket that needs a wiggle, same thing.

Packing is what decides whether a posted machine arrives in one piece.

Wrap the device, then box it so it can't slide. Put that box inside a bigger one with padding on every side. Shake it — if it rattles in your hands, it rattles for a thousand kilometres. Send it tracked and insured.

Open a laptop that has lived near the sea and you can see it. Green crust in the charging port. Fans packed with damp dust instead of moving air. Sand under the keys.

Salt air and coastal damp are hard on electronics. The same machine ages faster here than it would inland.

A few things that help:

Keep the laptop off the floor and off the patio table.
Blow out a sandy charging port before you plug in, and never force the cable.
Sit it on something hard. A bed or a couch blocks the vents.

Console powers on, fans spin up, and the TV says no signal. Usually that is the HDMI port, not a dead console.

Rule out the easy things first. Try a different cable. Try a different HDMI input on the TV. Check the TV is on that input. If the picture only appears when you hold the cable at an angle, you have your answer.

The port is soldered straight onto the mainboard, so a knocked cable bends pins or cracks the joints. Replacing it is board-level soldering, which we do here in the Ramsgate workshop. Consoles courier in to us from anywhere in South Africa.

A drink over the keyboard: the first few minutes decide the outcome. Hold the power button until it's off. Don't switch it on to check — current through a wet board is what kills it. Guests test the Wi-Fi in the back bedroom and out by the pool. One router in the lounge rarely reaches either.

If you run a holiday rental, shop or restaurant between Umtentweni and Port Edward, December coverage gets decided now, on paper. Cabling is the slow part — ceiling runs, mounting cameras, getting an access point out to the far cottage. That is planned work, booked in advance, not a job to start the week before Christmas.

Storm season is back. The lightning itself rarely touches the machine. What does the damage is the surge running down the line, and the jolt when the grid comes back up.

Power supplies go first. Drives second — one caught mid-write when the power snaps back often doesn't come up again.

Two things worth doing before the next storm:

Unplug at the wall, and that includes the fibre or DSL line. Surges travel down data lines as happily as power lines.

Check your multiplug. A socket splitter with a light on it is not a surge protector. If there's no joule rating printed on it, it isn't protecting anything.
