Technology Station in Electronics

Technology Station in Electronics Electronic and Mechanical Design, Prototyping, Electronic Manufacturing, 3D Printing, Laser Cutting,

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) initiated the Technology Stations Program (TSP) to create support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in targeted business sectors. Situated at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), the Technology Station in Electronics (TSE) forms part of the TSP, and operates in the electronic, electrical, and information and communication technology indust

ries. The TSE collaborates with various academic departments within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment to fulfil its mandate. The main focus of the Station is on electronic design and development services, electronic manufacturing services and training. The established electronic manufacturing platforms, supported by the digital design capability at the Station assist industry and academia with the design, development and construction of prototypes, concept demonstrators, pre-production models, re-work solutions for electronic assemblies, automatic optical inspection (to improve the quality of operations), as well as short learning programmes and training opportunities for students and interns.

We help businesses turn ideas into market-ready solutions.

At the Technology Station in Electronics, we support companies with:
• Electronic & mechanical product development
• Rapid prototyping and design validation
• Low-volume manufacturing and pilot builds
• Technical and entrepreneurship training

If you need extra engineering capacity or a partner to take a concept to prototype (and beyond), let’s talk.

South Africa’s unemployment challenge remains severe: the official unemployment rate was 31.9% in Q3 2025. For young people it’s even tougher, 58.5% unemployment for ages 15–24 (and 38.4% for ages 25–34) in the same quarter (Statistics SA, 2025).

That’s why the Technology Station in Electronics (TSE) focuses on training that goes beyond certificates.

We deliver hands-on technical training + entrepreneurship fundamentals, so learners don’t just “learn”, they leave with practical, income-generating capability: skills that can be translated into real micro-services in their communities, supporting households and local businesses while building a pathway out of unemployment.

When people can solve real problems (repair, troubleshoot, build, install, maintain) and understand how to price, market, and run a small operation, training becomes a lever for local economic activity, one skilled person at a time.

If you’re a partner, sponsor, municipality, NGO, or employer looking to create measurable skills impact, let’s collaborate.

As we close off 2025, we reflect with gratitude on a year marked by growth, innovation and meaningful community impact at the Technology Station in Electronics (TSE).

This year, our team had the privilege to:

• Support over 800 individuals through technical and entrepreneurship training programmes.
• Empower women, who represented more than 50% of all participants.
• Equip youth—over 95% of those we served—with skills to step into new economic opportunities.
• Work alongside numerous innovators as we continue to assist with new product development and prototype manufacturing, turning ideas into tangible, market-ready solutions.

None of this would have been possible without the continued support of our clients, funders and partners who share our vision for a more inclusive and innovative South Africa.

Thank you for walking this journey with us. We look forward to achieving even greater impact together in 2026.

We recently had the privilege of presenting a Smartphone and Tablet Repair training programme to unemployed individuals in Soshanguve, Gauteng.

👨‍🔧👩‍🔧 This hands-on course focused on practical repair skills and basic diagnostics—equipping participants not only with technical knowledge but with the confidence to take their first steps toward self-employment.

💡 We're proud to share that some of the attendees have already started their own businesses, offering much-needed services within their communities.

At our core, we believe in making a difference—one skill, one person, one opportunity at a time.

✨ We look forward to supporting more success stories like these across South Africa.
