Scammers are getting smarter every day, but a few simple habits can keep you (and your money) safe.

Here’s what actually works:

• Think twice before clicking any link or opening attachments from people you don’t know
• Use long, unique passwords — and never reuse the same one everywhere
• If someone contacts you asking for money or personal details, double-check who they really are through a different channel
• Your bank, SARS or any official organisation will never ask for your password, PIN or OTP
• Only shop on sites that start with https:// and show the padlock
• Keep your phone and computer updated
• Talk about scams with family and friends — awareness really does help
