Microsoft Purview and GRC
I was task to identify how you can use Microsoft Purview as an GRC tool if at all.
To be able to do this I had to know what GRC is:
1.
GRC stands for Governance, Risk, and Compliance. It's a strategy and framework that helps organizations manage their overall governance, risk management, and compliance with regulations. Here's a basic rundown of what GRC entails:
2.
Governance: This involves the set of rules, policies, and processes that ensure an organization's activities align with its business goals. It encompasses ethics, resource management, accountability, and management controls. Effective governance creates an environment where employees feel empowered, and behaviors and resources are controlled and well-coordinated.
3.
Risk Management: This is the process of identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks that could potentially lead to negative outcomes for the organization. Risks can come from various sources, including operational, procedural, technical weaknesses, and external threats like cybersecurity attacks and fraud.
4.
Compliance: This ensures that the organization adheres to laws, regulations, and internal policies. Compliance management involves following proper accounting practices, operating ethically, and ensuring that all activities are conducted within the legal framework.
5.
GRC helps organizations achieve their objectives, address uncertainties, and act with integrity. It integrates various capabilities across departments such as governance, strategy, risk, compliance, security, audit, finance, legal, IT, and HR.
I started with Financial Risk management out of interest. And came to the following conclusion, and a I presume many financial institutions already know this:
How can Microsoft Purview help with financial risk management
Microsoft Purview plays a strategic role in financial risk management by providing a unified, intelligent framework for data governance and compliance. Its features help financial institutions manage risk at multiple levels by ensuring that sensitive data is identified, classified, and governed properly. Here’s how:
1. Holistic Data Discovery and Cataloguing

Unified Data Map: Purview creates a comprehensive catalogue of your entire data estate. For financial institutions, this means knowing exactly where sensitive customer transactions, investment data, and proprietary trading information reside.

Automated Discovery: It automatically scans for data across on-premises, cloud environments, and applications, ensuring that no critical asset is left unmonitored.

Enhanced Visibility: With a complete map, risk managers can track the flow of financial data, assess potential vulnerabilities, and understand dependencies which are vital for risk assessments.
2. Robust Data Classification and Sensitive Data Management

Data Sensitivity Labels: Purview helps in applying and managing sensitivity labels to data assets. It identifies and classifies high-risk financial data—such as personally identifiable information (PII), account numbers, or proprietary financial models.

Compliance Alignment: These classifications are crucial for aligning with financial regulations—like SOX, GDPR, or other regional financial supervisory mandates—ensuring that data handling practices meet compliance standards.

Policy Enforcement: By embedding rules around data access and handling, Purview acts as a gatekeeper that mitigates the risk of unauthorized access or data breaches.
3. Data Lineage and Audit Trails

End-to-End Visibility: Understanding data lineage—from creation, transformation, to usage—enables risk managers to see how data flows through various systems. This clarity is essential when pinpointing the origins of discrepancies or potential fraud.

Audit and Traceability: Detailed audit logs and reports help in the investigation of any anomalies. When regulators or internal auditors require evidence of compliance, Purview’s comprehensive records ensure accountability and support proactive remediation.
4. Regulatory Compliance and Policy Management

Alignment with Regulations: Financial institutions operate under strict regulatory frameworks. Purview helps maintain and monitor compliance by continuously assessing your data estate against these rules.

Custom Policy Management: It allows organizations to define, monitor, and enforce policies tailored to their risk profile. Whether it’s restricting data access during peak transaction periods or ensuring financial reports meet governance criteria, Purview helps mitigate compliance risk.

Real-Time Alerts: Automated alerts on policy violations empower risk teams to react swiftly, reducing the impact of any breach or non-compliance event.
5. Integration with Broader Risk and Security Ecosystems

Data-Driven Risk Models: The insights derived from Purview can feed directly into risk analysis platforms, supporting the analysis of potential operational risks. For example, integration with security incident and event management (SIEM) systems can provide a real-time picture of threat scenarios affecting financial data.

Collaborative Framework: Microsoft Purview seamlessly integrates with other Microsoft security tools and cloud services, ensuring that risk management isn’t siloed but part of a broader, unified approach to data security and compliance.
Visual Overview
Below is a simplified ASCII infographic illustrating how Microsoft Purview ties into financial risk management: [Grab your reader’s attention with a great quote from the document or use this space to emphasize a key point. To place this text box anywhere on the page, just drag it.]
This diagram shows that Purview’s individual components collectively support a comprehensive risk management framework by ensuring that every piece of financial data is tracked, classified, and governed properly.
Why This Matters
For financial institutions, agility in risk management isn't just about reacting to incidents—it’s about anticipating them by having complete control over how data is governed. Microsoft Purview facilitates:

Enhanced Decision-Making: With clear insights into data movement and classification, risk managers can better evaluate vulnerabilities and craft preemptive strategies.

Cost Efficiency: Early detection and mitigation reduce the cost and complexity of responding to data breaches or compliance failures.

Trust and Credibility: Robust risk management frameworks bolster investor and client confidence, which is invaluable in the highly regulated financial sector.
Further Considerations: While Purview automates a significant portion of your data governance, a successful risk management strategy also requires human oversight. Financial institutions should pair these technological capabilities with well-trained staff and robust operational procedures. Additionally, integrating Purview with incident response plans and advanced analytics can further elevate your organization’s risk posture.

Windows 10 End of Support

When Windows 10 reaches its end of support on October 14, 2025, several key changes will occur:

No Security Updates: Microsoft will stop providing security updates, which means your system will be more vulnerable to viruses, malware, and other security threats.
No Technical Support: You won’t be able to get technical support from Microsoft for any issues you encounter.
No Feature Updates: There will be no new features or improvements added to Windows 10.
Software Compatibility: Over time, new software and hardware may not be compatible with Windows 10, as developers focus on newer operating systems.
To stay secure and up-to-date, it’s recommended to upgrade to Windows 11 if your device supports it. If you have any specific concerns or need help with the upgrade process, feel free to ask!
