𝟭𝟯,𝟰𝟱𝟭 people follow Brighton Square on Facebook. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲. 📣

A centre can put up posts all day long. It only becomes a page worth following when people show up on it, and you do.

Every monthly draw winner this page celebrates starts with one of you dropping a slip in the box. Every SUPERSPAR Brighton special that goes up here is for the people who'll walk in and shop it. And every comment, question and good wish turns a post from the centre into a conversation between neighbours.

That's what you made. Not a noticeboard, but a place where the people of New Brighton, Gqeberha talk about their own centre.

So the number is the headline, but the thank-you is the point. It goes to every one of the 𝟭𝟯,𝟰𝟱𝟭, from the very first follow to the latest.

Thank you for being here, from all of us at 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗲. 🤝

Before the pot, after the shops, before you eat: the twenty seconds most of us rush. 🧼

Today is 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆, and this isn't a new rule. We all know how to wash our hands. We just shorten it. A splash, a quick rub of the palms, a wipe on the dish towel, and back to the onions.

The palms always get the attention. The backs of the hands, the gaps between the fingers and the nails mostly don't.

So here is the full wash at the basin, with at least 𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀 of scrubbing in the middle. Wet your hands. Soap up and rub palm to palm. Do the back of one hand, then the other. Lace your fingers together and work between them. Scratch your nails across the soapy palm of the other hand. Scrub done? Then rinse it all off and dry on a clean towel.

Hard to count while you scrub? Hum Happy Birthday from start to finish, twice. When the second one ends, you can rinse. 🎶

Three moments worth slowing down for: before the pot goes on, when the shopping bags come through the door, and before anyone sits down to eat. The little ones copy whatever they see at the basin, so let them see the long version.

From all of us at 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗲 in New Brighton, Gqeberha. 👐

First papers today, Class of 2026. Every shopper at Brighton Square is rooting for you. 📝

The 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 written papers begin today, and for the next few weeks the calendar belongs to you.

So think of this post as a good-luck card from the whole centre. The kind that gets passed from hand to hand until there's no space left to write.

We'll write the first line. You walk in carrying more than a pen. You carry every early alarm, every page read twice, every weekend given up so that this day could go well. That work doesn't stay at home. It sits down at the desk with you, and so does everyone who believes in you.

Now the card is yours to fill. Who is your 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱-𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 for: the matric in your house, the one down the road, or the whole Class of 2026 at once? ✍️

Signed, every shopper and every shop at 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗲, New Brighton, Gqeberha. 🍀

Gqeberha's spring wind wants your washing. 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀 that keep it on the line. 🌬️

Every spring, somebody on the street ends up chasing a sheet over the fence. It doesn't have to be you.

1. Peg at the seams. The seam is the thickest part of a shirt or a towel, so the peg has something solid to bite on.

2. Heavy items low and in the middle. Jeans and towels go where the line hangs lowest. Their weight steadies the line, so the lighter things either side stop whipping about.

3. Sheets folded over the line. Pegged by one edge, a sheet turns into a sail. Fold it over the line, peg both edges, and the wind has far less to grab.

4. Whites in before the dust picks up. Once the wind starts lifting dust off the road, the whites are the first to show it. Bring them in while they're still clean.

If the peg tin is running low after winter, pegs and washing basics go on your next Brighton Square list. 🧺

Dry washing, still in your own yard. From 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗲, New Brighton, Gqeberha.

Every slip in that box started at a till in Brighton Square. September's draw pulled one of them out on camera, and it belonged to 𝗡𝗼𝘅𝗼𝗹𝗼. 🏆

This is the real draw, filmed at the competition box. Keep the sound up: the name is read out at 0:17.

Halala, Noxolo! You have won a 𝗥𝟮 𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗥 𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿.

October works the same way. Spend R150 or more at any store in the centre, from SUPERSPAR Brighton and TOPS to PEP and the pharmacy, write your full name and a contact number on the back of your till slip, and drop it in the competition box by 𝟯𝟭 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿.

Your next till slip could be the next name out of that box. Which shop is yours going to come from?

Molweni, New Brighton. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝘆 today, from the walk to school right through to home time. ☀️

The forecast for Gqeberha has it cool when the children leave, about 14 degrees, then about 20 degrees and bright from late morning. Cool air doesn't make the sun any softer. By break time it's strong.

That's where the hat comes in. A cap shades the eyes, but it leaves the back of the neck and the ears out in the sun. 𝗔 𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗺 covers all three. 👒

So today:
1. Send the brimmed school hat, not the cap.
2. Remind them it's for break time too, not only the walk. Between ten and four is when the sun is strongest, so the shady side of the playground is the better spot.

A hat in the bag doesn't help anyone. A hat on the head does.

Have a good Thursday, everyone. 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗲, New Brighton, Gqeberha.

One conversation this October could matter more than any special. 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 starts it. 🎀

Every family has a woman who holds it together. The one who remembers every birthday, makes every month stretch, and never once puts herself first on the list.

October is 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, and awareness starts somewhere small: talking about it, out loud, with the women you love. At the kitchen table. On the walk home from the shops. On the phone to your sister in another town. Not in a whisper, and not "one day".

That is what the pink ribbon is for. It makes the conversation easier to start, and it tells every woman facing this that she is not facing it alone.

This month, 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗲 stands with every mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend in our community, here in New Brighton, Gqeberha. 🌸
