Wat ek verseker weet en elke dag ervaar... 'n outistiese kind is nie noodwendig afsydig oor emosies nie. In my arms elke dag, is die wonderlikste spons vir my emosies.... my barometer wat dadelik vir my laat weet ek MOET rustig raak. En as ons die meter lesings laag hou, gefokus op liefde en aanvaarding, ipv woede... dis dan in daardie balans wat die kind gemaklik voel om uiteindelik te praat na jare se stilte.

Today I am just so saddened by the cultural barriers keeping many kids from getting the autism, ADHD and therapeutic support they need. We have to stand up and break the stigma !

So I am finishing off an epic year in my classroom. The most important thing I learned is still: a mom who opens their mind to their child's special needs, raises a child with an open sky above him to rise up like an Eagle. A mom who lingers in denial, traps their eagle in a small cage...to live a cloistered life. We must not be scared of the word autism or special needs anymore. God created it to make us better people with more grace and patience. The most you will ever learn, will be at the feet of an autistic child.

Today I learned to be glad about an over active child and all the noise that goes with it, because when it disappears and all that's left is an empty shell, hollow eyes and a silent voice, then you should weep at God's feet to say sorry for the mistakes that lead up to that point. Here's a thought: let's learn to love ADHD in all it's loud facets and let's embrace autism exactly how God made it: heavenly sent... BECAUSE IT IS MERELY GOD CHALLENGING US TO BE BETTER, TO ACCEPT A DIFFERENT KIND OF ALIVE !

Hierdie afgelope kwartaal het ek 2 mamma's se reaksie beleef wanneer die dokter begin sinspeel op die woord "outisme". Die eerste mamma het na my toe gekom en gevra vir 'n eenvoudige verduideliking oor wat dit vir haar kind beteken, dat die dokter bietjie vinnig oor die klippe gejaag het. Ek het 'n blom gevind op die internet wat dit só mooi verduidelik. Elke blaar het 'n afdeling van die spektrum op, en die blom het ligter areas en helder areas. Hoe nader jou kind beweeg aan die ligte kleure van die blom, hoe nader kom hulle aan "high functioning" en dis 'n pad gesaai met daaglikse oefeninge, oplees, weer probeer en dan ook terapie - terapeute is my tuiniers wat werk met die wortels van my blomme. Ek is so dankbaar vir hulle. Maar ek bid ook vir die tweede mamma wat nog worstel met sterk woorde of "labels" wat vir haar alles behalwe soos 'n blom voel. Ek bid vir haar kind, dat hy wel in sy blom kan begin ronddans, tot hy by die ligte pastelkleure uitkom. Mar ek dra op my hart, die mamma wat nog 'n lang pad het voor sy sal kan dans. Ons weet nie hoe dit voel nie. Haar skoene is nie ons s'n nie. God het hierdie pad gekies vir haar kind, om hom as 'n instrument in die wêreld te gebruik. Ons leer SO baie by spesiale kinders. It's the entire essence of humble humanity. But also a humble lion, whom God can and will elevate to the highest mountain. Let's put the light on for these moms.... pass them the light... because that is what God destined each teacher and caring person to do.... where you can't fix something or someone, you can ALWAYS leave them in a room that is brighter than the one you found them in !
