What was once state of the art Solar Systems, are now becoming aging infrastructure. As with all key infrastructure, proper planning and maintenance is crucial to the longevity and safety of the system. 🔧🧯

On Sunday morning (09 July 2023), the Vodacom building at Century City caught alight. Fire fighters on scene reported that the fire had stemmed from the rooftop solar system, causing the fire to spread throughout the rooftop. They further reported that the building had suffered extensive damage and that they had to be cautious of falling debris while attempting to tame the raging fire. Due to the unfortunate location of the fire’s origins, the existing fire detection and suppression systems within the building were powerless against the raging rooftop fire as it made its way into the building from the top down. As a result, six fire pumps were used to battle the blaze, along with two of the Bronto hydraulic aerial platforms. 🔥🚒

Incidents like this can be easily avoided through proper planning and maintenance, this can also be further contained by applying fire detection and suppression systems to any alternative energy installations.
