Africa's largest bulk water utility got hit by a cybersecurity incident last week. Its payment systems and GIS platform were reportedly disrupted. But water treatment, quality control and bulk supply kept running.
That's not luck. That's what happens when the systems that matter most are isolated, tested and ready to fail safely.
Three lessons every SA organisation should take from this:
✅Incident response readiness isn't optional
Rand Water moved to a disaster recovery environment and brought in external specialists fast. If your business doesn't have a documented, rehearsed incident response plan, you're deciding your response in the middle of the crisis. That's too late.
✅Offline backups keep the lights on
When core systems go down, what keeps operating is whatever wasn't reachable by the attack. Immutable, offline backups are the difference between a bad week and a total shutdown.
✅Endpoint protection is your first line, not your last
Most breaches start on a single compromised device. Modern EDR, patched systems and strict access controls stop small footholds from becoming utility-wide incidents.
South Africa accounts for the overwhelming majority of ransomware detections on the continent. This isn't an "if." It's a "when." The organisations still standing after the "when" are the ones who prepared before it.
