Three things South African businesses should act on this week:

1. Supplier risk. One reused password breached a software supplier to about 45 insurers. A ransom was paid, and the data leaked anyway. Check how your suppliers protect your data, and stop password reuse in your own team.

2. Recovery cost. Recovering from ransomware costs South African organisations over R17 million on average, before any ransom is paid. Tested backups and email security cost far less.

3. Hardware prices. Memory chip prices are forecast to rise another 10 to 15% this quarter, with tight supply expected into 2028. Planning laptop and server refreshes early can save you money.

Recent reports say South Africa's air traffic provider found malware linked to the early stages of ransomware on an operational network, and has called in outside forensic investigators.

ATNS says its own team contained the threat and removed the malware. It hasn't yet said how the attackers got in, or whether any data was taken.

Whatever the findings, the lesson applies to every business: the early stage is where you win.

Three questions for your team:
1️⃣ Would we see early warning signs, or only the ransom note?
2️⃣ Is our network separated so one breach can't spread everywhere?
