What a Domain Name Is

Have you ever typed a website name like google.com or facebook.com and wondered what that actually is?

That is called a domain name.

A domain name is simply the name of a website. It is the address people use to find you on the internet. Just like your house has an address so visitors can locate you, your website also needs an address so people can reach it. That address is your domain name.

Behind the scenes, every website is stored on a server with a long set of numbers called an IP address. Something like 192.168.1.1. But no one wants to remember numbers like that. So, domain names were created to make things easy for humans. Instead of typing numbers, we type words we can remember.

So, when you type “mybusiness.com” into your browser, your browser translates that name into the real numeric address and takes you to the right place.

A good domain name is important because it becomes part of your identity online. It is what people remember. It is what they share with others. It is what they type when they want to find you again.

If you are building a brand, a business, a blog, or even a personal portfolio, owning a domain name makes you look more serious and professional. It tells people that you are intentional about your space on the internet.

In simple terms, a domain name is your name on the internet. It is how the world finds you online.

Search the world's information, including webpages, images, videos and more. Google has many special features to help you find exactly what you're looking for.
