Alternaria Brown Spot (ABS) remains one of the most challenging and economically damaging diseases in susceptible citrus cultivars.
In this CRI Podcast discussion, Prof Jacquie van der Waals, Researcher and Programme Coordinator: Preharvest Diseases, unpacks new CRI research aimed at helping growers manage ABS more effectively through improved cultivar screening and smarter disease prediction tools.

The discussion explores:
• why ABS can severely impact export quality and packouts
• CRI’s work on identifying resistant and susceptible cultivars earlier
• the development of reliable inoculation and genetic screening methods
• how the CRI ABS infection risk model helps growers optimise spray timing
• why preventative disease management is critical

A key message from the episode is that by the time visible symptoms appear, infection has already taken place. This makes proactive management and accurate infection risk prediction essential for effective control.
The discussion also highlights how better timing of fungicide applications could help growers reduce unnecessary sprays while still maintaining protection during high-risk infection periods.

Biosyntrix is a South African company working in the biosecurity space across the SADC region, with a strong focus on helping governments, industries and farmers detect and respond to pests, diseases and environmental threats earlier.
What makes us different is that we sit between the field and the decision-maker. In many surveillance systems, valuable information is collected on farms, at borders, in forests, in conservation areas or by field teams, but it often gets stuck in notebooks, spreadsheets, WhatsApp messages or isolated reports. We help turn that information into structured digital data that can be mapped, tracked, analyzed and used for real decisions.
We have developed a growing ecosystem of digital platforms and tools, including Biosecurity Africa, Wild2Earth, CropWatch Africa, EntoLynx, with white-label or co-branded options. Together, these systems support field reporting, surveillance programmes, pest and disease monitoring, diagnostic traceability, dashboards, early warning, environmental monitoring and smart sensor integration.
Biosyntrix works across several sectors, including plant health, animal health, forestry, wildlife, environmental and marine monitoring, invasive species and trade-related biosecurity. The goal is not only to collect data and provide the tools do do it, but to help build a connected surveillance network where field observations, laboratory results, industry data and national decision-making can speak to each other.
Biosyntrix is about closing the gap between what is seen on the ground and what needs to happen next. Whether it is a farmer reporting a suspected pest, a inspector logging a sample, a laboratory confirming a diagnosis, or a national authority monitoring risk across regions, Biosyntrix provides the digital backbone to make that process faster, clearer, secure and more reliable.
In simple terms, we help turn biosecurity from a reactive process into a more connected, proactive and intelligence-driven system. Contact us to find out how we can help you!

Closing the Gap: From Field to Lab

At Biosyntrix, we believe biosecurity surveillance does not end when a pest, disease, or unusual field observation is recorded. That is where the response begins.

One of the biggest risks in biosecurity is time.

When a frontline officer, farmer, field technician, or industry partner detects a suspected biosecurity threat, every delay in reporting, sample movement, verification, and feedback can increase the risk of spread.

That is why Biosyntrix is providing digital systems that connect the full surveillance pathway:

Field Detection → Mobile Reporting → Cloud Dashboard → Sample Traceability → Diagnostic Follow-Up → Response Action

Through platforms such as Biosecurity Africa, Wild2Earth, CropWatch Africa, and our developing EntoLynx technologies, Biosyntrix helps turn field observations into structured, actionable intelligence.

Our systems support:

✅ Geo-tagged field reporting
✅ Photo, video, and symptom capture
✅ Sample and specimen traceability
✅ Dashboard-based surveillance monitoring
✅ Early warning and response coordination
✅ Integration between government, industry, field teams, and diagnostic partners

By digitizing the frontline, we help reduce delays, improve data quality, and strengthen the connection between what is seen in the field and what needs to happen next.

Biosecurity is biodiversity protection in action.

Every healthy ecosystem depends on early detection, rapid response, and informed decision-making. At Biosyntrix, we support plant, animal, forestry, wildlife, and environmental health through smarter surveillance, monitoring, and digital biosecurity tools.

This video is a reminder that protecting biodiversity starts with knowing what is happening in the field — and acting before small risks become major threats.

International Day for Biodiversity | 22 May

Biodiversity is not separate from biosecurity — it is one of the reasons biosecurity matters.

Healthy ecosystems support food security, clean water, climate resilience, wildlife, agriculture and human well-being. Protecting biodiversity starts with better awareness, early detection, responsible monitoring and the ability to respond before small risks become large impacts.

At Biosyntrix, we contribute through biosecurity technology, environmental monitoring, wildlife management support, pest and disease surveillance, field reporting and real-time decision support.

This year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact,” reminds us that every verified sighting, every field survey, every monitoring point and every local action contributes to a stronger, more resilient future.

Local action. Connected data. Global impact.

🌿 Plant health is not just a theme. It is the foundation of food security, trade, biodiversity, and national biosecurity.

This year, Biosyntrix was proud to play an active role in the celebration of the International Day of Plant Health — a powerful reminder that protecting plants means protecting people, livelihoods, ecosystems, and economies.

We were honored to support the event in two important ways.

As part of the interactive Biosecurity Experience, Biosyntrix joined government, research, and industry partners in bringing the full plant biosecurity chain to life. Across six educational stations, attendees moved through the journey from border inspection and on-farm biosecurity to surveillance, diagnostics, trade impacts, and market access.

Together with the National Department of Agriculture, our team facilitated the Surveillance & Reporting station — demonstrating how early detection, field reporting, surveys, and sample collection form the critical link between risk awareness and rapid response.

🔍 Detect early
📱 Report suspicious pests and diseases
🧪 Support surveys and sample collection
🌱 Protect agriculture, biodiversity, and food security

Biosyntrix also showcased our surveillance and field-based work at our exhibition table in the main hall, where we engaged with visitors, partners, and stakeholders on the growing role of monitoring, digital reporting, technology, and collaboration in strengthening South Africa’s plant biosecurity systems.

A sincere thank you to the National Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Council, Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, National Biosecurity Hub, and all stakeholders involved in making the day such a success.

At Biosyntrix, we believe the future of biosecurity will be built through connection — connecting people, data, field teams, technology, diagnostics, and decision-makers.

Because protecting plant health is a shared responsibility — and collaboration remains one of our strongest tools. 🌍🌿
