With thousands of competitors out there, how can you make your website stand out from the rest?

I'm Richard and the owner of Garden route Solutions and I'm going to offer you a few tips and guides to get your site to stand out from the rest.

What makes a good website you may ask?
Well, A website that grabs your audience's attention and easily offers them what they want is a step in the right direction.
One of the key points is good organization and structure. Your site should be free from clutter with a professional look. This allows your visitors to easily navigate through your site and find the content they are looking for easily. Furthermore original content is key for search engines such as Google. having updated content via posts and blogs are also good as these allow the search engines to rank sites giving you a better chance of being found during a search. The speed of a website is also important. Users get frustrated when they are waiting for your site to load if there are bulky pictures on your site. By optimizing graphics, video, and audio files this will keep your audience coming back for more. A website that is very easy to read will also help. As many people rarely read what is on your site and scan quickly over the content its best to use well-balanced colours and clear text. and lastly, Avoid dark backgrounds and colors that are in your face.
I'm hoping that by following these basic rules, you will be on your way to a well-presented website that will be a pleasure for your visitors to view.
I've added a link below from a web developer that will take you step for step on the road to designing a WordPress site. Happy designing

Morning all!
Here again with a few more freebies for my faithful followers:

Everybody is getting into website development nowadays and why not!

The platforms we are given to work on have made it somewhat easier over the years to delve into this ourselves. Whether its a personal page or something for a friend. Maybe you want to follow a career into designing websites, There are many open source tools and platforms to get you started in the right direction. Most websites nowadays are built on an online CMS platform (Content Management System) such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and many others freely available to us but for the person out there that wants to design something from scratch not based on this form of service, can use a great free program like "Kompozer" a WYSIWYG designer with code editing abilities. This form of web designing is built off the blogging style platforms like WordPress. Without knowledge of HTML coding, you can have a great site up and running in no time.

To add to this, One is always looking for some great photos or images to spruce up your design but we have to be aware of what to use as not all images on the internet are for free. Many are protected by copyright. Pixabay has a fantastic collection of stock images, Vectors, Videos and artwork available for your web projects. And whats a great site without a cool font or two? Fontlibrary offers a selection of fonts to load onto your system not only to use in a website development environment but on any program like Word, Excel, OpenOffice, Email etc.
Just a couple of freebies for the weekend to get those creative juices flowing. Hope you have fun creating and please share your projects us.

Happy designing!

Open-Source Vs. Commercial Software: What you need to know

Most of us at one stage of our lives have been faced with the decision to use commercial or open source software to perform a specific task... So what is the difference and what does it mean?

One can spend hours debating the differences between the two but ultimately it comes down to a few basics.
Firstly cost, Commercial software or also known as off the shelf software is normally pricey and the reasoning behind this is that these companies have high costs involved when producing software, Teams of researchers, developers, trainers and marketers involved in the making of a program. The outcome of the program is normally well presented in fancy packaging and easy to use. Examples will me Microsoft office, CorelDraw, AutoCAD to name a few.

Open source on the other hand, is developed by the community who have a passion to give back to the masses in the form of free software. Teams of people collaborate together to develop close to commercial software as possible but as they donโ€™t have budgets to work with, they tend to cut back on training material and marketing tactics making it harder for people to know that these programs are available to them. Word of mouth and sometimes searching the web leads us to such programs.

With this in mind, I have taken it upon myself to educate people interested into the wonderful world of free and open source software.

One of my favorite sites is "open source alternative" and I have included the link here. www.osalt.com
This site does a great job of comparing commercial programs against their free counterparts.

Looking for a CorelDraw alternative then Inkscape is your program.
Office too expensive to buy? Then Libre office is a free alternative for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
Outlook for email? No problem Thunderbird just one of the alternatives email programs available.
Or ever felt like designing your new home but AutoCAD expensive? How about Sweet home 3D

The site is worth a visit and I guarantee you will find software free for any project you plan to tackle. And the community doesnโ€™t leave you stranded either, Just a quick visit to Google search or YouTube will offer thousands of training resources & videos on the programs you download.

So, what you waiting for? Itโ€™s time for you to enjoy the world of free :)
