Open-Source Vs. Commercial Software: What you need to know
Most of us at one stage of our lives have been faced with the decision to use commercial or open source software to perform a specific task... So what is the difference and what does it mean?
One can spend hours debating the differences between the two but ultimately it comes down to a few basics.
Firstly cost, Commercial software or also known as off the shelf software is normally pricey and the reasoning behind this is that these companies have high costs involved when producing software, Teams of researchers, developers, trainers and marketers involved in the making of a program. The outcome of the program is normally well presented in fancy packaging and easy to use. Examples will me Microsoft office, CorelDraw, AutoCAD to name a few.
Open source on the other hand, is developed by the community who have a passion to give back to the masses in the form of free software. Teams of people collaborate together to develop close to commercial software as possible but as they donโt have budgets to work with, they tend to cut back on training material and marketing tactics making it harder for people to know that these programs are available to them. Word of mouth and sometimes searching the web leads us to such programs.
With this in mind, I have taken it upon myself to educate people interested into the wonderful world of free and open source software.
One of my favorite sites is "open source alternative" and I have included the link here. www.osalt.com
This site does a great job of comparing commercial programs against their free counterparts.
Looking for a CorelDraw alternative then Inkscape is your program.
Office too expensive to buy? Then Libre office is a free alternative for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
Outlook for email? No problem Thunderbird just one of the alternatives email programs available.
Or ever felt like designing your new home but AutoCAD expensive? How about Sweet home 3D
The site is worth a visit and I guarantee you will find software free for any project you plan to tackle. And the community doesnโt leave you stranded either, Just a quick visit to Google search or YouTube will offer thousands of training resources & videos on the programs you download.
So, what you waiting for? Itโs time for you to enjoy the world of free :)
