"Say YES and figure it out later." Sound familiar? It’s one of the most popular pieces of advice floating around professional networks.
While it sounds inspiring on a motivational poster, in reality, blind optimism often leads to burnout, broken trust, and missed expectations.
Here is why blindly agreeing before you’re ready can backfire—and what to do instead:
Overpromising Damages Trust: Taking on commitments you cannot deliver on degrades your professional reputation far faster than turning down an opportunity with honesty.
Chronic Overwhelm and Burnout: Constantly scrambling to "figure it out" creates unnecessary friction, stress, and subpar results.
Respecting the Craft: Truly understanding your scope allows you to respect both the client's investment and your own capacity.
What to Say Instead 👇
Instead of giving a reckless "Yes" or a flat "No," try these balanced responses:
Option 1: "I’m very interested in this, but I want to ensure it gets the focus it deserves. Here is what I can commit to right now..."
Option 2: "This falls outside my immediate expertise, but I can partner with [Name/Team] or map out a timeline that lets us execute this effectively."
Option 3: "I’d love to take this on. To ensure success, can we adjust the timeline/budget so I can bridge the gap?"
Calculated growth beats reckless commitments every time. Say yes to the challenge, but negotiate the terms so you can actually deliver quality.
What’s your take? Have you ever said "Yes" too early and regretted it, or did you figure it out along the way?
